Greater Manchester is a Unitary Authority Council encomposing the city of Manchester and several of its surrounding towns including:

  1. Bolton
  2. Stockport
  3. Trafford

As a unitary authority it is funded by a portion of local council taxes to fund services such as:

  1. Greater Manchester Police Authority
  2. Greater Manchester County Fire Service

Other services are directly funded and managed by the local councils.
