NWS is an Australian television station owned by the WIN Corporation that is based in Adelaide, Australia. The station's name, NWS is an acronym of The NeWs South Australia.

History

Origins

NWS-9 began broadcasting on September 5, 1959. NWS-9 was the first television station broadcasting in Adelaide. NWS-9 studios is located at Tynte Street, North Adelaide. The station was owned by Rupert Murdoch who also owned The News newspaper. Popular shows produced in the past at NWS 9 include the variety show Adelaide Tonight, science show The Curiosity Show, The Country and Western Hour, children's show Channel Niners.

NBN Limited (1981)[1]
Entity Share
Lamb Family 35.02%
Wasley Family 30.14%
Hadjoin Pty Ltd 19.88%
Others 14.96%

In early 1980, NBN Limited purchased Southern Television Corporation Limited, owners of NWS, for AUD$19 million.[1] In 1981, Hadjoin Pty. Ltd., a subsidiary of Parry's Esplanade Limited (later Parry Corporation), purchased 19.88% of NBN Limited for AU$6.7 million.[1]

Following this, Parry then attempted to buy Wasley's stake in NBN, but was blocked by the Supreme Court of New South Wales. It was later revealed that the Lambs had opposed NBN's purchase of the Star newspaper and the attempt to buy 2HD. The company also faced possible suspension from the Australian Stock Exchange if a decision wasn't made soon. In order to resolve the tension, NBN sold NWS to the Lambs in exchange for the majority stake in NBN in 1982.

2000s

On May 30, 2007, Southern Cross Broadcasting announced its sale of NWS-9 to the WIN Corporation for $105 million.[2] The WIN Corporation gained control of the station on July 1, 2007.

Programming

Some Adelaide-produced shows today include Here's Humphrey, the high rating Postcards, Out of the Blue, Garden Guru's SA, Building Ideas and Feeling Good.

News

National Nine News Adelaide with Rob Kelvin and Kelly Nestor

National Nine News Adelaide is produced from NWS's news studios by Rob Kelvin and Kelly Nestor, with Kym Dillon presenting sport. Ali Carle is currently presenting weather until a permanent replacement for Keith Martyn is announced.

Georgina McGuinness is the weekend presenter for the Adelaide news service. Mark Bickley presents sport and Xavier Minniecon presents the weather.

The Adelaide bulletin was notable for having the last remaining all-male co-anchor lineup (with Kevin Crease and Rob Kelvin), which ended in early 2007 after Crease's death. This was one of the longest serving news duos in Australia lasting from 1988 until 2007.

Throughout the 1990s, Deanna Williams was the main fill-in presenter and state political reporter. Following her resignation in March 2002, either Kelvin or Crease would fill in for McGuinness on weekends, but in 2005 the situation arose where all three presenters were unavailable, and weekend sports presenter Mark Bickley had to read the news. Reporter Kate Collins is now the fill-in news presenter on weekends.

Troy Grey fills-in as sports presenter over summer, while Ali Carle from Triple M Adelaide occasionally presents weather along with her sport reporting duties.

Logos

From 1979 to 2008 the station used Nine Network logos, however in 2008, the station produced an independent logo shared with STW.
