Islamic Association of Greater Detroit (IAGD) was founded in 1978 by immigrants from the Indian subcontinent. The Islamic Association of Greater Detroit was situated at Larson Middle school, ultimately moving to Rochester Hills, Michigan in 1982 in a newly built facilty.

History

The IAGD originally had a large prayer hall and an adjacent social hall with kitchen. The masjid provides services for all the daily prayers.

They manage a Montessori school and daycare. They have large banquet and gym facilities that are both rented out to the community at large.

The summer youth camp, Camp Al-Hilal, has long received the backing and support of the United Way of Michigan. In its' 28th year, it brings Muslim youth together from across the metro Detroit area for a weeklong camp that includes outdoor activities and lectures/discussion sessions about Islam.

Beginning in 2000, the masjid underwent significant expansion. While their recent expansion was significant, adding classrooms, the gym, an industrial kitchen, and much more, the IAGD is also preparing to add several “Islamic” features to their existing building including a mezzanine for women inside their mosque, a minaret, and a large dome.

The current Imam is Aly Lela. Past Imams have been Muneer Fareed (currently Secretary General of ISNA) and Achmat Salie.
