==History==
The University of New York, Tirana (UNYT) [1] is the first private university in the State of Albania. The university was inaugurated in September 2002, having received a license from the Albanian government. It was founded in order to address to the regional needs for an American educational system and to prepare future leaders and business executives with a liberal arts and business education, a cross-cultural perspective, and a competitive spirit. Its objectives are to implement flexible and innovative practices in teaching and learning in response to the globally changing face of higher education.
Currently, the University of New York at Tirana offers Bachelor’s degrees conferred by the State University of New York [2] / Empire State College [3] in Tirana. Furthermore, as from September 2004, UNYT, in collaboration with Institut Universitaire Kurt Bösch in Sion, Switzerland and the University of Sunderland, offers a Master’s program in Business Administration [MBA]. Last, but not least, as from June 2004 UNYT has become an associate partner of the Cambridge University International Examinations.
Situated in the heart of the city of Tirana, UNYT aspires to establish itself as a dynamic, multicultural and leading center for higher education in the Balkans. To support the needs of its students, research, and scholarship the university is expanding its library resources, organizes scientific seminars promoting research and scholarship, and engages into original research and promotion of highly scholar works.
UNYT is a fascinating blend of challenge and vision, in response to the needs of a global society and era. It is for this reason why UNYT attracts students of high ability and employs academic staff of distinction, some recognized as international leaders in their fields.
The current Rector and Academic Dean is Prof. Dr. Gramoz Pashko (Economist, former Deputy Prime Minister, former Minister of Economics of Albania).
UNYT has become a very competitive university in the State of Albania. The academic curricula UNYT provides follow the modern pace of western universities. For instance, UNYT is the host institution of the State University of New York / Empire State College academic programs.
Currently, there are 430 students enrolled in different academic programs. Furthermore, UNYT offers the opportunity of studying through the State University of New York Center for Distance Learning.

UNYT is composed of several departments:
1. Department of Economics and Business Administration
Courses offered in Economics, Management Science, Finance, Marketing, International Business, and Business Communication
2. Department of Computer Sciences
Courses offered in Computer and Information Science
3. Department of Science and Mathematics
In addition to the Mathematics for Business and Computer Science, the department will be offering a special course in Differential Equations starting in Fall 2005.
4. Department of International Relations and Political Science
Courses offered in International Relations and Political Sciences
5. Department of Arts, Humanities, and Psychology
Courses offered in Psychology, Art History, and World Civilizations.
6. Department of Media and Communications
7. Department of English Language and Literature
