Mystique is a fictional character, the alter ego of Raven Darkholme in the Marvel X-Men comic books.

Mystique is a mutant shape-shifter able to alter the formation of her biological cells at will and thereby assume the form of other humans or humanoids as well as adapting certain desired genetic traits. In the past, Mystique has manifested night vision, talons in her fingers, and natural body armour. However, she can not adapt superhuman powers other than her own. In addition, damages to her biological tissue are known to heal at a relatively fast rate and she can form a resistance to pathogens and poisons almost uppon contacting them. Finally, Mystique's aging process is very slow and seems to have ceased at some point of her early adulthood. Her natural form is that of a relatively young woman with red hair, yellow eyes, and blue skin.

Mystique's exact age remains unknown. However, her earliest meeting with her lesbian lover Destiny (Irene Adler) is stated to have occured at "the dawn of the 20th century". At the time, Raven reportedly posed as a man and worked as a consulting detective. Historically the first known private detective agency is considered to be Le bureau des renseignments (Office of Intelligence), founded in 1833 by Eugène François Vidocq. Destiny's alter ego is presumably a reference to Irene Adler, a notable love interest to fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. The character debuted in "A Scandal in Bohemia", first published in July, 1891. So Raven is presumed to have been active at least during the late 19th century or early 20th century.

Rebecca Romijn-Stamos played her in X-Men (movie).
