The Clique Series is a young adult book series, written by Lisi Harrison. Nine novels have been released in the series so far. The series revolves around five girls, Massie, Alicia, Dylan, Kristen and Claire, who collectively make up “The Pretty Committee”, the “A-Lister” clique of the fictional Octavian County Day school (OCD).

The novels have been compared to Cecily von Ziegesar’s Gossip Girl series with less mature content, as both books deal with the social cliques and hierarchys of adolescant/ teenage girls. The first novel in the series, The Clique, was published in 2004 by Little, Brown and Company.

Warner Brothers plans to release a live-action DVD adaptation of the first Clique book in the fall of 2008. The known cast of the movie can be found here.

Characters

Massie Block

Massie Block is the leader or “Alpha” of The Pretty Committee. She could be considered one of the protagonists of the series, along with Claire Lyons, but the terms “anti-hero” or “anti-protagonist” are more popular with fans, taking her cruel behavior and degrading treatment of her peers into account. Most of the books revolve around Massie and her attempts to stay “cool and in control” while protecting her “Alpha” status.

Claire Lyons

Claire Lyons is the “New Girl” of the Pretty Committee and the most probable main protagonist of the series. She lives in the Block’s guesthouse and, over the course of the series, has become very close friends with Massie. In the beginning of the series she is somewhat innocent and naïve, but is forced to mature as the cruel treatment from the Pretty Committee causes her to become more aware of what people think of her.She is really obessed with her boyfriend,Cam Fisher, whom Massie liked first. In Dial L For Loser, Claire becomes a celebrity and must mature even more due to hateful treatment from Massie and her so-called celebrity friends at the end of the book.

Alicia Rivera

Alicia Rivera is the second-in-command or “Beta” of the Pretty Committee. In the first book, the “Beta” position was filled by Dylan Marvil but sometime between the second novel (Best Friends for Never) and third (Revenge of the Wannabes) Alicia became Massie’s “beta”. In the first three books, she expresses the desire to start her own clique, but when she does so in the third book, Revenge of the Wannabes, Massie goes after her and quickly unravels Alicia’s clique, humiliating Alicia in the process. After “Revenge Of The Wannabes” Alicia seems much more content with her role as the “beta”

Kristen Gregory

Kristen Gregory is the “Athlete” and the “Genius” of the Pretty Committee. While she is part of the Pretty Committee, she hardly has main plotlines revolving around her. She is very smart and attends Octavian County Day school on a scholarship. It is revealed about halfway through the first book that Kristen is “poor”. It is unknown if the Gregory’s are actually poor or if they are simply middle-class, which would probably be considered poor by Westchester standards. She stands as the reason to the Pretty Committee, always at hand with a witicism or moral. While she has a tendancy to switch to the winning side during fights, she proves to be a very loyal friend to the entire Pretty Committee.

Dylan Marvil

Dylan Marvil is the most fun-loving member of the Pretty Committee. Though she is tallest out of the five girls, she tends to act less mature than the other girls. She is shown as being very self-conscious and always worrying about her weight. This is probably because of the way her mother neglects her, and her distant homelife. Despite Alicia’s position as the “Beta”, Dylan seems to be the only one who remains loyal to Massie thorought the novels, with the exception of "The Revenge of the Wannabes," in which Dylan had turned against Massie because she thought that Massie had leaked her secret to Alicia.

Layne Abeley

Layne is Claire's friend with narrow green eyes and dark brown uncombed hair who is constantly on the fringe of popularity and is very avant-garde. She likes alternative music, dresses in random clothes, holds protests and is viewed with disgust by the everyone in the Clique except Claire. Once, it was said by Massie that she could actually be pretty if she "brushed her hair and stopped wearing old men's knockoffs". Layne was also responsible for Claire's hair disaster. In each book, Layne is obsessed with a different kind of food, including oatmeal, popcorn with mustard, popsicles, jalepenos, Go-Gurts, Crystal Light and Slim Jims. She has two other best friends (besides Claire) named Heather and Meena, who share her love of protests. In Revenge of the Wannabes and It's Not Easy Being Mean, she wears headgear. In Sealed with a Diss, she tries to help Claire discover the truth behind Nikki, a girl Claire reads about in Cam's journal. But she stops after she found out Claire snooped, claiming it was a major invasion of privacy. Even so, she is a true friend of Claire's, always being there at the right times, a very loyal friend.
