Peggy McKercher ( April 17, 1929 - ) C.M., SOM, B.A., LL.D. became the 11th Chancellor of the University of Saskatchewan.[1] And on March 31, 1998 Peggy McKercher was re-elected Chancellor by acclamation.[2] Peggy has served as chairman of the University’s Committee on Heritage Buildings and has helped greatly in the restorative work on the College building, a national historic site of Canada.[3]

Biography

Peggy attended the University of Saskatchewan and was active in the student government, and athletics while receiving her Bachelor of Arts. As a student she was awarded the Spirit of Youth Award. To celebrate the university's 75th Anniversary, the University Athletic Wall of Fame was created, of which Peggy McKercher, is one of the inductees.[3]

Municipal politics and community service

Peggy McKercher was the first women to serve for the rural municipality of Corman Park Council. Peggy was on the board of Directors for the Jeux Canada Games as well as for ParticipACTION. She was chair of the Meewasin Valley Authority (MVA), and Vice-Chair of Wanuskewin Heritage Park, which was developed and built by MVA. She has also served as a Board member of the National Capital Commissions’ Canadiana Fund, the Saskatchewan Arts Board, and Saskatchewan representative on the Trans Canada Trail Foundation Advisory Board. She has also served on the Mayor’s South Downtown Task Force, the Saskatchewan Medical Research Foundation, the Saskatchewan Order of Merit Advisory Committee, and the Canadian Water Resources Board of Directors.[3] Peggy McKercher is one of the Mendel Foundation Members,[4] as well, she is one of the newly appointed Saskatchewan Arts board members.[5]

Other awards

In 1989, Peggy MkKercher received the Saskatoon Citizen of the Year award. She has been awarded also the Rosalie Early Memorial Award, the Governor General’s Canada 125 Award, the Ernst and Young, Bank of Montreal Award for Socially Responsible Entrepreneur of the Year, Western Canada for 1994. In 1995 Peggy McKercher was invested in the Order of Canada. On November 21, 2001 she received the Saskatchewan Order of Merit.[6] On May 29, 2002, Peggy was presented an honorary Doctor of Laws byPeter MacKinnon, President.[3]

There is an Academic & Athletic Scholarship presented to students in honour of Peggy McKercher.[6]
