Alfred Dregger

Alfred Dregger (10 December 1920 in Münster - 29 June 2002 in Fulda) was a German politician of the (CDU).

Dregger served from 1956 to 1970 as Öberburgermeister or mayor of Fulda and from 1982 to 1991 Chairman of the CDU/CSU group in the Bundestag.


After graduating from a school in Werl Dregger entered the German Wehrmacht in 1939. He served until the end of the war rising to the rank of officer. In 1946 he began studying law, eventually achieving a doctorate in 1950. Alfred Dregger was married and had two children. Dregger was a member of the CDU and from 1967 to 1982 was Regional Chairman for Hessen. He also served from 1962 to 1972 as a member of the Hessian Landtag and from 1972 to 1998 Alfred as a member of the German Bundestag. In 1969 he was also elected as a memeber of the national board of the Party. Dregger was known as a staunch conservative and was the most prominent memeber of the so called Stahlhelm-Fraktion, a National-Conservative wing of the CDU.
