Nexuiz is an open source 3D computer game that belongs to the "first-person shooter" genre. As of writing this, Nexuiz has just been released to public audience.
Nexuiz is developed mainly using open source software - e.g. its game engine is a vastly improved version of id Software´s GPL quake engine named DarkPlaces. Nexuiz is entirely free-as-speech (both engine, gamecode and data).
Overview
Nexuiz focuses on quick, lethal battles with balanced weaponry. As of this release there are 9 weapons and 17 official maps. While Nexuiz is not intended to be an eye-candy engine, it still features many stunning effects such as Coronas, Bloom(reflected glow), Realtime World and Dynamic Lights (and shaders, with OpenGL 2.0), and, of course, blood(although this can be relatively easily turned off by turning off particles and decals). It is also completely multiplayer, and allows for quick hosting of games. Nexuiz can also have new gametypes, or whole conversions quickly applied to it(much like Quake). It also supports most, if not all, Quake 1 modifications (although with varying functionality).
Community
Nexuiz, despite it's relatively young public age, has a large online community willing to help out newcomers. At the time of this writing, there are 800 members on the forums, and more who just download and play the game.
The Nexuiz community is relatively easy to join. you simply have to download the game, setup your player profile (which usually takes no mor than 5 minutes), and click "Join Game". The built-in server browser will show all active servers, and you just join by clicking.
You can also come to the http://www.nexuiz.com/forums/index.php?act=idx forums] to ask for help, suggest new features, or just talk.
