Observed on February 2nd, Candlemas marks the end of the Christmas season in the Christian calendar. It is also one of the Scottish quarter days. Also known as the Feast of the Purification of the Virgin Mary (see ritual purification).

On this day, some people observe the tradition of lighting a candle in each window (or in each room).

In the United States, Candlemas became known as Groundhog Day.
