Basildon

Basildon is an industrial town in Essex England with a population of around 101,000 (1994 est). The town is located roughly 30 miles (50 km) east of London and 12 miles (19km) southwest of Chelmsford.

Basildon was created as a new town in 1949 from the merger of several smaller towns, and expanded to accommodate overspill population from London.

Basildon's main industries include: Chemicals, Clothing, Printing, Engineering, Tobbaco and Alcohol.

The pop/rock band Depeche Mode originated from Basildon, as did the singer Alison Moyet.
