A Red scare is a period of intense anti-communism in the history of the United States, accompanied by persecution and violations of civil liberties. The first major red scare in American history occured during the years 1919-1920, during a series of actions known as the Palmer Raids. The second one was the McCarthy era, from 1948 to the mid-1950s.
