The People's Democratic Republic of Algeria ('Al Jumhuriyah al Jaza'iriyah ad Dimuqratiyah ash Sha'biyah) is a country in Northern Africa bordering the Mediterranean Sea, between Morocco and Tunisia. The capital is Algiers.

Algeria's terrain is mostly high plateau and desert with some mountains and a narrow, discontinuous coastal plain. The mountainous areas are subject to severe earthquakes and mud slides.

The climate is arid to semiarid with mild, wet winters with hot, dry summers along coast; the high plateaus are drier with cold winters and hot summers; Algeria is prone to sirocco, a hot dust- and sand-laden wind especially common in summer.
