The israeli settlement of Netzarim was created as a kibbutz in 1984 (the kibbutz splitted a few years later in order to become a village). The 60 families village was often refered to in the media as a stronghold for radical religious, the settlement was the last to be evacuated in the august 2005 withdrawal of the Gaza strip ordered by Ariel Sharon's government.

The first attack of the second intifada happened there on september 27th 2000.

Netzarim was finally, peacefully evacuated on August 22nd, 2005 by the Israel Defense Forces. Its evacuation marks the end of a 38-year-long Israeli presence on the Gaza Strip.
