Aboriginal Wiltjas The Kaurna people along with many other Aboriginal groups made shelters called wiltjas. Wiltjas were like huts but were effective in keeping out beating rain and wind.

The process of making a wiltja was very modern was very modern in that the frame was made first with logs and then it was covered with dense leaves. Tricks were used in making the wiltjas like building the door on the north-east side so the south-west gale winds would not get in.

Wiltjas were found along and throughout the Flurieu Peninsula where it is very cold and windy so wiltjas must’ve been effective.

It is believed that wiltjas have been built for many years but there is no way of knowing.
