Meh

The reckoning link at the bottome of the page is kind of POVie. Meh. Skrew ball 07:25, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

--- The slogan that was used prior to the current one was "Giving our Best". I am unsure if it dates back to 1992, though.

Strike

I believe there was a major strike against the Safeway Corp. in 1978. I'll see if I can dig anything up on it.--Rockero 02:42, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Safeway, like most major US grocery chains, has faced a large number of strikes over its history - which spans the formation of the labor movement in the US. It might not make sense to list them all. Coriolis (talk) 09:46, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Slogans

IIRC,"Nobody Does It Better (for Less)" actually lasted until the late 1990's...Ranma9617 00:00, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This was what I originally thought too. Can anyone confirm this?

Two other slogan, probably for Canada: "We bring it all together." (late 1980s) "Today's Better Way." (early 1990s)--PsychoJason 23:40, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Technology

Should there be a mention of the year when Safeway began offering online groceries shopping and van deliveries? Club cards too, perhaps?

Safeway also owns Blackhawk Corp. One of the largest distributors of 3rd party gift cards in North America.

Name?

Hey, does anyone know where the name "Safeway" came from and what it means? There's got to be a story there. Useless Fodder 16:43, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have no way to verify it so i cant put it in the article but if someone can find more to verify it the basic story is it has to do with they were looking for a safer way to do the business --71.131.18.132 05:45, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm working on this - I added a point from the 1966 annual report (40 years) about it being the result of a "contest" at Seelig, though not clear who participated in the contest. Coriolis (talk) 07:42, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Second largest?

It says Safeway is the second largest in North America.... Then who is first? --Sofeil 12:55, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Kroger. Clipper471 14:27, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I believe supervalu Inc. is the second largest and Safeway is third largest--Micheal21 01:23, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Trivia Section

The trivia section in this article bothers me for a few reasons One it is stated that trivia should be avoided in the guidelinesWP:TRIV Two this is a practice done is more than just Washington DC and for more than just safeway so the uniqueness implied is not correct. Three if we want an article section like this it should be retitles to reflect it as something other than trivia and to include examples from more than just Washington DC based on the same fact we aren't supposed to write or title articles from just one country's perspective. Fair use rationale for Image:Safeway1970slogo.gif

Image:Safeway1970slogo.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 22:48, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Safeway in Saudi

I lived in Saudi up until 1993, and the Safeway in al-Khobar was definately there up until then. Anyone know what happened to it and the other stores since then? --Zilog Jones 14:47, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject class rating

This article was automatically assessed because at least one WikiProject had rated the article as start, and the rating on other projects was brought up to start class. BetacommandBot 14:09, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Suitability of the "Environmental issues" section?

Not that I would want to dismiss the problem of plastic bags, but I wonder how the contents of that section relates to Safeway in particular. It sounded a newspaper report on a Annapolis hearing that relate to no retailer in particular and Safeway should not be singled out-- it is been clear that Safeway is neither instrumental or the worst offender in plastic bag pollution; it is, after all, not any bigger than Kroger or SuperValu or Wal-Mart. --Samuel di Curtisi di Salvadori 08:55, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was about to say the same thing. Coriolis (talk) 07:41, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

International

No mention I could see of the many UK stores. Did they sell these off? Een so they should be mentioned. Johnbod (talk) 13:49, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just did a search of wiki but added UK and I got this. Looks like the company is no longer. --CubBC (talk) 10:18, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thanks - I see now both acquisition & disposal of the UK business are mentioned in the article. Johnbod (talk) 13:16, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
