The following is a list of characters appearing in the video game Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. The cast of Metal Gear Solid 4 is comprised primarily of returning characters from previous Metal Gear Solid games, although a few new characters are introduced as well.

Main characters

Old Snake

Akio Otsuka David Hayter

Old Snake (previously known as Solid Snake) reprises his role as the protagonist and main playable character of the game. Aging rapidly due to advanced cellular degeneration, Snake undergoes his final mission to terminate Liquid Ocelot.

Otacon

Solid Snake's sidekick since the first Metal Gear Solid, returns to assist him once again via Codec. He builds several of the equipment used by Snake on his mission, such as the Octocamo suit and Metal Gear Mk. II, Snake's robotic companion. Otacon is once again voiced by Christopher Randolph in the English version and Hideyuki Tanaka in Japanese.

Raiden

The protagonist of Metal Gear Solid 2. After the events of the Big Shell mission, Raiden ended his relationship with Rosemary and disappeared after rescuing Sunny from the Patriots. He returns in the game outfitted in a Cyborg Ninja exoskeleton and helps Snake during his mission. He is once again voiced by Quinton Flynn in English and Kenyu Horiuchi in Japanese.

Naomi Hunter

The FOXHOUND medic who injected Snake with the FOXDIE virus in Metal Gear Solid. She has been kidnapped by Liquid Ocelot and forced to help him hijack the SOP system. She is rescued by Snake in South America and assists him and his crew thorough the remainder of the story: becoming romantically involved with Otacon and develops a friendship with Sunny.

Supporting characters

Sunny

The daughter of Olga Gurlukovich from Metal Gear Solid 2. After the Big Shell Incident, Sunny was rescued from the Patriots by Raiden and taken under the custody of Snake and Otacon. She is a gifted computer programmer who, along with Naomi Hunter, designs FOXALIVE, the virus which Snake uses to disable the Patriots' AIs. Sunny is voiced by Christina Pucelli in the English version and Kikuko Inoue (the voice of Rosemary and The Boss) in Japanese.

Drebin 893

A weapons launderer who assists Snake by disabling ID-tagged weapons taken from PMC troops. He also provides exposition on the origins of each of the B&B members. He is usually accompanied by his pet monkey, Little Gray. Drebin is actually a Patriots' spy assigned to help Snake defeat Liquid Ocelot. He injects Snake with a syringe that not only contains nanomachines that allows him to use Drebin's weapons, but also a new strain of FOXDIE which kills Big Mama, Ocelot and Big Boss. Drebin is voiced by Khary Payton in the English version and Keiji Fujiwara (the voice of Sigint) in Japanese.

Roy Campbell

Solid Snake's commanding officer in Metal Gear 2 and Metal Gear Solid. He assigns Snake on an unofficial mission to assassinate Liquid Ocelot and foil his insurrection. To protect Raiden and Rosemary's child from The Patriots, he arranges a fake marriage with Rosemary and pretends to be the father of Raiden's son. This ploy causes a rift between Campbell and Meryl, who is now aware that Campbell is her biological father. Campbell is once again voiced by Paul Eiding in the English version and Takeshi Aono in Japanese.

Mei Ling

The data analyst who saved the player's progress in the first Metal Gear Solid. In Metal Gear Solid 4, she is the Captain of the recommissioned vessel USS Missouri and lends her support to Snake and Raiden in their assault of Shadow Moses. Mei Ling is once again voiced by Kim Mai Guest in the English version and Houko Kuwashima in Japanese.

Rosemary

Raiden's former girlfriend from Metal Gear Solid 2, she appears as a psychological counselor in a combat stress platoon, offering her advice to Snake on dealing with stress. She gave birth to Raiden's son, Little John, but hid the child from him and then had Campbell posed as the child's father after arranging a fake marriage.

Big Mama

The leader of the resistance group Paradise Lost, who assists Snake in his battle against Liquid Ocelot. Big Mama is the new identity of EVA, the Chinese spy who assisted Big Boss in Metal Gear Solid 3. After failing to fulfill her mission in Snake Eater, she was invited by Big Boss to form part of The Patriots and then became the surrogate mother who gave birth to Solid and Liquid. After Big Boss's supposed death, Big Mama conspired with Ocelot to kill the other Patriots to avenge him, leading to the deaths of Para-Medic (Dr. Clark) and Sigint (Donald Anderson). She was one who reconstructed Big Boss's body, using spare parts from Solidus' and Liquid's remains. She then uses Solidus' body as a decoy for Big Boss's. Big Mama is voiced by Lee Meriwether in the English version and Mari Natsuki in Japanese.

Rat Patrol Team 01

Meryl Silverburgh

The heroine from Metal Gear Solid, Meryl is now the leader of Rat Patrol Team 01, a division of the USACIDC sent to investigate Liquid Ocelot's PMC activities. She is now aware that Roy Campbell is her true father, but resents him due to his marriage with Rosemary.

Johnny (Akiba)

A former Genome Soldier, Johnny was the guard who was stripped by Meryl in the first Metal Gear Solid. He serves as Rat Patrol's electronic expert. Like in the original, he suffers from constant diarrhea. He is the only member of the team that was not injected with nanomachines, which becomes a benefit after the SOP system is taken over by Liquid Ocelot. He reveals he has been infatuated with Meryl since their first encounter and they end up being married in the end of the game.

Jonathan and Ed

The other two members of Rat Patrol 01. Jonathan is a hulking Korean-American who serves as the team's heavy weapons specialist and has a mohawk in the shape of an exclamation mark; while Ed is an African-American who serves as the team's sniper and Meryl's second-in-command. They are named after the main characters from Policenauts, from Meryl originally debuted as a supporting character.

Outer Haven

Liquid Ocelot

Liquid Ocelot, formerly known as Revolver Ocelot, was an agent of The Patriots who lost his right arm in Metal Gear Solid and received a replacement transplant from Liquid Snake in Metal Gear Solid 2, causing Liquid's personality to take over his mind. In Metal Gear Solid 4, his Liquid persona seems to have taken full possession of his mind, and he forms the private military company Outer Heaven to destroy The Patriots. Liquid Ocelot is voiced by Pat Zimmerman in the English version and Banjo Ginga (the voice of Liquid Snake) in Japanese. Koji Totani, the original Japanese voice of Revolver Ocelot, died before the release of the game, although his voice recordings from previous games are used in the Japanese version.

Vamp

The sole surviving member of Dead Cell from Metal Gear Solid 2 appears as a mercenary working for Liquid Ocelot, who develops a rivalry with Raiden. His apparent immortality is explained as being caused by rapid-healing nanomachines in his body. This benefit is removed by Snake through an injection of a specialized syringe prepared by Naomi, allowing Raiden to mortally wound him. Vamp is voiced once again by Phil LaMarr in the English version. In the Japanese version, he is voiced by film director Shinya Tsukamoto, who replaces Ryotaro Okiayu (his original seiyu in Metal Gear Solid 2).

The Beauty and the Beast Corps

Template:Vg-in-universe The Beauty and the Beast Unit is an all-female paramilitary force who serve as four of the game's bosses. Their animal names openly reference the members of FOXHOUND from Metal Gear Solid, and the emotions relating to the Cobra Unit from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The members are civilians who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, who cope with the damage done to their minds by becoming war machines. Their inner appearance is referred to as "Beauty", while their outer appearance is referred to as "Beast".

Four actual models were chosen for their in-game appearances as their "Beauty" side: Lyndall Jarvis, Scarlett Chorvat, Mieko Rye, and Yumi Kikuchi. The English dubbing for the characters is done by having the female voice actors perform the lines while Fred Tatasciore overdubs on top of the female voices, creating a split-voice effect for the characters.[1]

Screaming Mantis

Scarlett Chorvat

Screaming Mantis is perhaps the most powerful and intimidating member of the Beauty and the Beast Corps. Able to fly by some kind of unknown ability, it's rather apparent that she has great mental abilities that allow her to crush people at will. Additionally, it seems as though she can take control of the minds of soldiers, manipulating them like puppets to do her bidding, including killing their former allies. Turning these men into marionettes seems to be a particular favorite of hers; in fact, dangling from the many arms of Mantis are two puppets that appear to be Psycho Mantis from MGS1 and The Sorrow from MGS3. It has been revealed that the Psycho Mantis puppet is used to controls and manipulates living people while The Sorrow puppets can be used to manipulate dead bodies. However, her powers are limited by the fact that they only work by manipulating the nanomachines inside a person, meaning people who do not have nanomachines or who have the ability to suppress them are effectively immune to her powers.

Crying Wolf

Eriko Hirata Debra Wilson Skelton (Beauty voice)
Fred Tatasciore (Beast voice)
Mieko Rye

Crying Wolf is the physically strongest member of the Corps, attacking with a rail gun and sheer brute force. Her olfactory system is particularly strong, being able to smell her opponents on the battlefield. She was born in an unnamed village in Africa, in a country afflicted by civil war. After her family was killed in an attack, Wolf fled the village with her baby brother and became a refugee. When hiding from an enemy unit in a shack, her brother began to cry; she covered his mouth to silence him and accidentally smothered him to death. Upon reaching a refugee camp, Wolf was driven insane by her grief and by the cries of children. She experienced visions of a wolf killing the children of the camp; in reality, it was she who did so. Crying Wolf does not accept that she killed the children until she is defeated by Snake. Upon her death, her corpse is taken away by one of Sniper Wolf's wolves.

Crying Wolf's "Beauty" form is based off of model Mieko Rye.

Laughing Octopus

Haruna Aimoto Paula Tiso (Beauty voice)
Fred Tatasciore (Beast voice)
Lyndall Jarvis

Laughing Octopus is a master of camouflage, disguising as various things including a muscle anatomy mannequin, painting, dead Haven solider, and a wall. This is all possible, because of her Octocamo, which is also apart of her helmet. She also wields a FaceCamo Mask, which can either blend into the surrounding enviorment or change into the face of anyone. This allows maximum camouflage.

Octopus also has control of four robotic tentacles. They can send an electric charge toward a captured enemy.Occansionally she curls into a ball and soots out an inky smoke. She commonly uses the tentacles to strangle her enemies, but she also impales them into her enemy's body. Her other weapon is a P90 Submachine Gun.

Raging Raven

Yumi Kikuchi Nika Futterman (Beauty voice)
Fred Tatasciore (Beast voice)
Yumi Kikuchi

Raging Raven is an aerial based member of the Corps, utilzing UCAVs and a grenade launcher to attack her enemies. Born in Aceh, Indonesia, Raging Raven was taken as a prisoner of war as a child. After enduring months of torture and starvation, Raven's captors abruptly abandoned the prison, leaving her and the other child prisoners to be eaten alive by ravens. Raven was the last living child; though instead of eating her, the ravens pecked away her bonds. Raven found the base camp of the group that had tortured her and killed both the soldiers and civilians residing there.

Psycho Mantis

Japanese voice actor English voice actor
Shozo Iizuka Doug Stone

The ghost of Psycho Mantis makes a cameo following Snake's defeat of Screaming Mantis. Psycho Mantis attempts his fourth wall-breaking tricks from Metal Gear Solid, but is thwarted by the PlayStation 3's use of a hard drive instead of memory cards and the SIXAXIS's lack of a rumble feature. However, if using a DualShock 3, Mantis will triumphantly proclaim that Rumble is Back.

The original Patriots

Zero

Big Boss's commanding officer and close friend in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. After the events of Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, he forms the Patriots along with Big Boss using the funds amassed from the Philosopher's Legacy. After a fallout between the two spawning from the distrust Big Boss gained for Zero after the latter used the former for experimental cloning use without his approval, Big Boss broke away from the Patriots and formed Outer Heaven. After Big Boss' betrayal of him, Zero no longer trusted the next generation with control over The Patriots, and instead constructed five AIs to succeed him. By the time of Metal Gear Solid 4, Zero is over 100-years-old and in a vegetative state. He is unvoiced.

Big Boss

Believed to had been killed by Solid Snake in Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Big Boss is revealed to be alive, having been placed in an artificially-induced coma following his supposed death. His burnt body had been reconstructed with spare parts from Liquid's and Solidus' remains. He appears in the game's ending to reconcile with Solid Snake before dying for the third and final time as a result of coming into contact with Snake who had been injected with a new strain of FOXDIE that he was one of the targets of. Big Boss is voiced by Richard Doyle (the voice of The Fury) in the English version and Chikao Ohtsuka (Akio Ohtsuka's father) in Japanese.
