The Inbetweeners is a British comedy series about a group of sixth formers struggling at school, currently shown on E4 in the UK. The series follows Will (Simon Bird), who left a private school to go to Rudge Park Comprehensive due to his recently divorced mother's financial troubles.[2] It is set in a typical suburb in south west London. It gets its name, The Inbetweeners, from a social class of teenagers - people who are not cool enough to be popular and not geeky enough to be a nerd, therefore leaving a group of people inbetween, known as The Inbetweeners.[3] It has been announced The Inbetweeners will return for a second series in 2009.[4]

First Day

This is the first episode in the series, and was aired on 1 May, 2008. The show opens with Will (the main character)on his first day at a new school. It is explained that previously Will attended a private school but, because of money problems, has been relocated to a state school. The experiences of his first day include him being bullied by fellow students and insulting his head of sixth form, Mr Gilbert. Later on in the episode he meets the three other main characters: Simon, Jay and Neil. After hearing about a student gathering organised for later that evening at a local pub, Will decides to join them. In order to impress his new-found friends, Will attempts to, illegally, (due to his underage status) purchase alcohol. After failing to convince the bartender of his eligibility for the purchase, Will vents his frustration and, as a result, unwittingly reveals the underage status of all the students, which does little to impress them.[7]

Bunk Off

The second episode aired on 1 May 2008 (same day as the first). The episode shows the boys day as they bunk off school. The episode starts with Will and Simon meeting up and faking (poorly) to Mr Gilbert they are both ill. After this they meet up with the Jay and Neil, and Will buys them all alcohol. After this they head back the Neil's house and all get drunk but to their surprise, Neil's dad walks in but Will, who is drunk, winds up Neil's dad about being gay, Neil's dad goes mad and the boys make a quick escape. After this they go round to Carli D'Amato's house and Simon sprays I love Carli on her driveway only to be embarrassed by Carli and her friends. But Simon gets invited to Carli's home where he gets drunk and ends up throwing up on Carli's little brother.[8]

Thorpe Park

This episode aired on the 8th May and starts off introducing the main storyline. Simon is about to take a driving test, but doesn’t feel confident that he will pass, whereas Will, Jay and Neil are discussing the possibilities that a car could do for them. Before Simon even takes his test they have already decided to go to Thorpe Park, a nearby Theme Park. During Simon’s test he is examined by a female examiner who tries to relax him with sexual connotations; Simon allows her and ends up passing his test. His dad then buys him a small yellow Fiat Cinquecento Hawaii much to his dislike and embarrassment from friends. Simon then goes to collect Will and Jay to take them to Thorpe Park (Neil is already there, because he works there). On the journey there Jay spots some girls in a car ahead of them and orders Simon to follow them; however when he turns into the road he finds that he is behind a hearse and in front of the car supposed to be following it. On arrival at Thorpe Park Jay tries to the open the car door whilst Simon is driving it and the car door detaches itself from the car. After that they all go into Thorpe Park to find Neil, who is naked and in pain after a wasp stung him. Finally Will gets to go on the ride, but after waiting for so long he finds out that there is only space for one more at the front. He gives in after much swearing only to find that the people who “pushed in” were kids from the "Happy Foundation", a charity for Down's syndrome affected children. After the ride they return to the car and it has food covering it and the windows and doors smashed, presumably done by the Happy Foundation.[9]

Girlfriend

Will gets a girlfriend and partially has sex with her. Later on he finds out she's dumped him when she appears on the school Blind Date. Jay meanwhile appears to have a new friend, until after much "oooh fwend!" abuse from the other members of the cast, loses the plot and jumps up and down on his car.[10]

Caravan Club

Jay takes them to a caravan site with his parents. Much to the delight of the rest of the gang that wish to dismiss the 'massive orgy' legacy that it has made for itself due to Jay's hugely wild and sensational stories of the camp supposedly consisting of a teenagers usual fantasy, sex. In this case girls who are 'wet for it'[11] Jay's dad stinks the caravan out and the lads try getting laid at one of the camps discos, with Neil ending up fingering a girl in the car much to the disgust of the other boys as he didn't clear up after himself.

Xmas Party

This episode aired on the 29th of May and is the last in the series. It's the end of term and Will has been voted the chairman of the Christmas prom committee. He struggles to find a team to help put it together on top of the troublesome head of 6th form and threats from the school maniac. However, with the help of his mates he manages to put together a half decent party.[12]

DVD

The Inbetweeners series one was released on DVD on 2nd of June 2008, four days after the first series finished. The British Board of Film Classification awarded it a 18 certificate.[13]

Production

The Inbetweeners is filmed in various locations, largely in and around Ruislip in West London (predominantly at the recently opened and modern Ruislip High School) but also in surrounding areas such as Harrow and Pinner. [citation needed]
