Area of London to the east of Tower Bridge and north of the River Thames. Historically one of the poorest areas of London, now home to various urban regeneration projects. The area where the BBC soap opera Eastenders is set, though to say it popularised the area is a mistake. In the 60s tis was the area most associated with gangster activity, most notably The Krays.
