The devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans were particularly notable because of the racial discrepancy of those affected - many media photographs of victims solely showed African-Americans in a city with a white population of 28%. This has led to extensive discussion on why the hurricane appears to have affected almost more black residents of the city. It is noted that the poorest areas would obviously have been most badly affected. It has also been noted that poor people had less means to evacuate by car and Africans Americans tend to be poorer than whites. The incident also raised questions regarding why African-Americans are so heavily prevalent in the poorest areas and having lower-graded jobs of poorer pay. President George W Bush received massive criticism for being too slow to respond to the crisis.
