Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by HappyDog (talk | contribs) at 23:56, 9 February 2004 (Community Page msg). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Template:Communitypage The name Wikipedians choose for themselves is not set in stone. On request, Wikipedia developers can easily change user account settings and article histories such that all previous edits of a given user are attributed to the new name. This has been done several times in the past, either voluntarily, or forced due to our policy on offensive usernames.

When a name is changed, the previous account ceases to exist, and the user may immediately log in with the same password under the new name. The user may wish to re-create the old account to prevent impersonation. In the case of forced name changes, the old account will be recreated by the developer and then blocked. Signatures in talk pages can be changed manually if desired. The deletion log and the upload log are not altered.

Please place requests in the section below.

(To request attribution changes for individual edits of articles -- including changing attribution from an IP address to your username -- see Wikipedia:Changing attribution for an edit instead.)

Requests for name change

  • I request to have my name changed to User:Sam Spade. I will also change the email by which I connect to the mailing list. I assume there is no problem with this? My reasons for doing so are pretty simple, I had no idea how hateful people here could become, and I no longer want my name connected to such unpleasentness. Also, I am not amused w jokes made about my name resulting from having created a mailing list account. Do I need to request a seperate name change on the meta-wikipedia? Jack 03:13, 28 Jan 2004 (UTC)
  • In matters of church and state of Wikipedia... I am not sure if this is the right place -- but User:Jesus_Saves! is the kind of POV prostletizing username that makes those of us who are jews, muslims or other intelligent, non-evangelical christians feel all icky and weird in a collaboration-type atmosphere. I have nothing against religious choice and support religious tolerance of all sorts - but using wikipedia for POV expression via articles - or tacitly via usernames is quite offensive to some of us. • This is the right place, but at Wikipedia, decisions of this nature generally take a long time to make. In the meantime, please keep the discussion at User talk:Jesus Saves! -- Tim Starling 13:37, Jan 1, 2004 (UTC)
  • I don't know if it's possible, but I'd like to change change all the previous contributions from 128.195.100.178 to my newly created screenname. I'd appreciate it for the Vietnamese wikipedia as well DHN 23:26, 26 Nov 2003 (UTC)
  • I request to change my username from StarOfDavid to MathKnight. Thanks in advance. MathKnight 18:34, 5 Feb 2004 (UTC)
  • I made my account as ϼ«ï¼©ï¼ºï¼µ: I believed I put simply my name with latin alphabet, but then I invoked other language input-method. Now I would like to change my acount into KIZU which I use basically i

Previous name changes

  • User:Tokerboy to User:TUF-KAT
    • Voluntarily changed in the interests of community harmony. TUF-KAT felt that the old name may have been offensive to some people.
  • User:Jlk7e to User:John Kenney
    • Objections to this user's unpronounceable name were raised when he applied for sysopship. John decided to take the plunge and reveal his real name to the world. Sysop status was given immediately.
  • Changed to User:H.J.
    • H.J. complained that a google search for her real name mostly returned discussions on this site regarding her previous disruptive behaviour. H.J. has since left the site, and requested all instances of her name be removed.
  • Changed to User:JHK
    • This user requested that their real name not be associated with Wikipedia after they left.
  • User:M123 to User:Maximus Rex
    • Hi, my username is currently User:M123, could it please be changed to "Maximus Rex". My current username was hastily chosen for the purpose of uploading an image. I think that a letter followed by 3 random numbers is more difficult to recognize. Thanks, M123 00:24, 18 Oct 2003 (UTC)
    • Done -- Tim Starling 01:13, Oct 18, 2003 (UTC)
  • Chris mahan to Christopher Mahan
    • Christopher had been going under the name "Christopher Mahan" for some time, with a redirected user page. After comments by Ed Poor on WP:RFA, Christopher requested a proper name change. -- Tim Starling 23:41, Nov 11, 2003 (UTC)
  • User:Jesus_blows_goats to User:pagan (if available -- not sure how to tell)
    • Requesting change due to non-inflammatory policy Jesus Blows Goats 08:08, 27 Dec 2003 (UTC)
    • Done -- Tim Starling 11:25, Dec 27, 2003 (UTC)
    • Request to change again, because I chanced upon a negative comment on my choice of nickname elsewhere; they didn't tell me, but lets pretend they did, and proceed to change mine anyway (FearÉIREANN: "User:Pagan's nickname is a classic example of a stupid nickname that reeks of presumed bias."). Please may it be changed to "kyk" ?
  • I would like to change my user name to Mark. According to Angela, the account user:Mark exists, but has never made any edits and there is nothing on its user or user talk pages. I don't feel all that comfortable having my full name on display on the internet. - Mark Ryan
  • I'd like to be something less acronymic. Could I buy a couple of vowels and become User:Hajor instead? Hjr 01:48, 22 Dec 2003 (UTC)
  • (I have deleted a previous request for a formatting change. Sorry if I caused you any inconvenience.) I would like to change my username from my full name to an acronym for my name: joshays. As always, your assistance is appreciated. jshanesmith 17:43, 6 Jan 2004 (UTC)
  • I have a similar request. I registered some time ago as Rlowry, not realising that a space was possible between initial and surname. It's irritated me ever since, and it's a fair bet that if I dislike seeing it myself then others will too. I think changing it to R Lowry would make it more readable, if it's possible. Thanks for your time, R Lowry 03:39, 9 Jan 2004 (UTC)
    • Done -- Tim Starling 12:24, Jan 26, 2004 (UTC)
      • Thanks again for your time. It's much appreciated. R Lowry 22:26, 26 Jan 2004 (UTC)
