Fatima Siad (born January 1, 1986) is a Somali-Ethiopian fashion model.[1] Raised in Boston, Massachusetts, Fatima placed third on America's Next Top Model, Cycle 10.
Early life
Born in Mogadishu, Somalia to a Somali mother and an Ethiopian father, Fatima grew up in Somalia with her mother and two sisters.[1] Her parents divorced at a young age. She underwent female circumcision when she was seven years old. Her two sisters were killed by the Somali army during the civil war. After her sisters’ deaths, Fatima and her mother fled to the United States when she was thirteen for safety.[2] Fatima states that she lived in a shack and had low self-esteem. She was a Posse Scholar[3] and went to Bryn Mawr College in 2004. She transferred over to New York University[4] to study pre-med and political science.[2] After finishing her season at top model, however, Fatima transferred back to Bryn Mawr College to finish her education.
America's Next Top Model
Fatima came into the competition with a powerful story to tell and a chance to inspire others. She placed third in her cycle. She received three first call-outs and four bottom-two appearances, the same amount as winner Whitney Thompson. She won one challenge, in which she received 50 extra frames. Fatima was criticized for not being able to take direction well. She was given a long, chestnut brown weave as part of her makeover. Fatima missed a photo shoot, unable to get her passport which she lost in Atlanta. That almost cost her the competition, and she landed in the bottom two along with Stacy Ann Fequiere. Her past performances and a strong portfolio saved her over Stacy Ann. She is the second girl to miss a photo shoot and be able to move on in the competition, the first being Shannon Stewart of Cycle 1 who was chosen over Robin Manning who also missed the same photo shoot. Fatima is the first girl to miss a photo shoot and be chosen over a girl who had done the photo shoot.
In one interview, Fatima stated that she felt that the show was a joke since she thought Claire Unabia, Lauren Utter, Katarzyna Dolinska or Anya Rozova should have won or at least not have been eliminated as early as they were. She also stated that the show may be based on politics.[5]
Career
Fatima did an interview for People Magazine for the April 7 2008 issue.[6] On May 14 2008, she attended a CW Upfront party and the 2008 American Image Awards in New York City along with fellow contestants Anya Rozova and Whitney Thompson, sporting a new short hair-do.[7][8] On June 22, 2008, she talked about her top model experiences at the Boston Fitness Expo in the Hyne's Convention Center in Boston, Massachusetts.[9]
Fatima appeared on the Tyra Banks Show for an episode titled Tyra's Pay It Forward with Joanie Dodds[10][11] that originally aired September 9 2008, modeled clothes on another titled Recessionista: Queen of Cheap with Anya Rozova and Katarzyna Dolinska [12][13] that aired on September 16 2008 and was on an episode titled America's Next Top Model Reunion with fellow Cycle 10 contestants that will air on October 1 2008.[14][15]
In addition, in an autobiographical essay she wrote for Orato.com titled Vulnerable Beauty: Finding My Voice, she spoke openly about female genital circumcision and her hopes for changing the practice to make it "less horrendous" for young girls. [16]
Fatima also did a photo shoot for the Boston Globe,[17] and walked for Gemma Kahng at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2009.[18]
She is currently signed with New York Model Management in New York City.[19]
