This list contains noteworthy Australians, and persons of Australian citizenship whose detention in prisons outside of Australia or execution is noteworthy.
Some reasons a detention can be noteworthy include:
- Some people are perceived as wrongly convicted or not receiving a fair trial, for example Schapelle Corby.
- Some people are perceived as receiving an excessively harsh sentence, for example Schapelle Corby.
- Some people are imprisoned for breaking laws many believe should not exist, for example Thomas McCosker.
- The legal framework of a person's detention is questioned, for example David Hicks.
Some Austraians detained overseas may be noteworthy in their own right, for example David Hicks or Michelle Leslie.

- Thomas McCosker, 55, sentenced April 5, 2005 to 2 years imprisonment for sodomy. Conviction overturned on appeal on August 28, 2005 and released the same day. He has returned to Australia.
