This list contains noteworthy Australians, and persons of Australian citizenship whose detention in prisons outside of Australia or execution is noteworthy.

Some reasons a detention can be noteworthy include:

  • Some people are perceived as wrongly convicted or not receiving a fair trial, for example Schapelle Corby.
  • Some people are perceived as receiving an excessively harsh sentence, for example Schapelle Corby.
  • Some people are imprisoned for breaking laws many believe should not exist, for example Thomas McCosker.
  • The legal framework of a person's detention is questioned, for example David Hicks.

Some Austraians detained overseas may be noteworthy in their own right, for example David Hicks or Michelle Leslie.
