Grayson Sinclair was a fictional character on the ITV soap opera Emmerdale. He is played by Christopher Villiers.
Character's background
Grayson is a member of the wealthy Sinclair family. He was married to Perdita Hyde-Sinclair, eldest son of Rosemary Sinclair and brother of Alasdair Sinclair.
He first appeared at a dinner party with his wife Perdy, and Alasdair was also present with his fiancée Sadie King. Grayson was seen again at Alasdair and Sadie's wedding, and was present when Rosemary tricked Sadie into annulling the marriage in exchange for a now-worthless Sinclair business.
Perdy recently revealed to Hari Prasad that Grayson was unfaithful to her. He also appeared to have a gambling habit which has seen him sell some of Rosemary's personal effects.
Grayson is an experienced solicitor although he appears to take on only specific cases that take his interest. He is currently defending King and Sons on a corporate manslaughter case related to a house collapse that resulted in the death of three people.
Grayson recently found out that Perdy has had five miscarriages. During a conversation between him and Perdy, she confessed this and appeared to resent him for his frequent philandering.
While away on a business trip, Perdy got revenge by having sex with Matthew King.
Grayson and Matthew never got on, despite being step-brothers following Rosemary's marriage to Tom King. It was further strained by Perdy's infidelity. Their relationship is based on mutual loathing that comes out in bursts of childish teasing from both sides. Matthew refers to Grayson (mainly to his face) as "Larry" a reference to a comedian who shares Grayson's name (Larry Grayson).
On December 10, 2006 Paul rescued Grayson from a homophobic attack by two teenagers in Hotten. Grayson revealed to Paul that he is bisexual.
What led Grayson and Perdita to get together was the death of Perdy's brother, Harry. Harry was killed in action during the Bosnian war. He and Grayson were best friends. Rosemary told Tom Grayson and Perdy had got together at Harry's funeral.
However, what began as a morbid love has turned into the real thing. Both have come through some terrible times, including Perdita nearly dying, following an ectopic pregnancy. Grayson faced up to what he had put her through during their marriage with his cheating and gambling, and when she said the marriage was over, he promised her that no matter what, he'd always be there for her from then on. However, he did not know Perdy has suffered from clinical depression for years.
Again, Grayson and Perdy's marriage was on shaky ground after he had her sectioned. Unaware of the truth surrounding his wife's 'mental problems', Grayson had been struggling to come to terms with Perdy's illness. He enlisted the support of family friend, Paul, asking him to be go between after Perdy refused to see him, but Paul developed feelings for Grayson. So far Grayson has shown no signs of returning those feelings. However, Paul isn't the only one who has his eye on Grayson. Perdy's friend and business partner, Katie Sugden, has now developed feelings for him and with Perdy away, Rosemary is eager for them to get together.
Whilst his wife was away Paul Lambert ended up comforting Grayson (as told to do so by Perdy). It ended up going too far and after Matthew teased Grayson about his mother at the Woolpack, they ended up kissing. Paul pulled away, feeling guilty about cheating on his fiancé Jonny Foster. Afterwards, Paul was hurt when Grayson saw it only as a drunken mistake and Paul realised that Grayson didn't return his feelings. Grayson returned to his wife but that didn't stop Grayson bedding Paul during a drunken evening, and Paul was shocked to discover just what kind of man Grayson truly is.
Perdy, meanwhile, had come home but Rosemary was desperate to get her out of the way so Grayson could move on. Perdy told Grayson that Rosemary was responsible for her illness but Grayson only believed her when the family doctor backed her up. His opinion was that her symptoms could be explained by accidentally taking the anti-malaria tablets - they would not mix well with anti-depressants. Grayson confronted Rosemary and threw her after she confessed. She moved in with her business partner Paddy Kirk briefly but after being told again by Grayson and Perdy to get out of their lives, Rosemary left the same day. As Grayson had refused to listen to Perdy, she had moved into Home Farm with Matthew. Grayson turned up there with Phoebe, Perdy's kitten, and begged her to come back, which she did.
Shortly after that, Grayson and Perdy began looking into finding a surrogate to carry their child. Perdy wanted to go to America as the law would be on their side but Grayson wasn't keen and when Katie Sugden offered to be surrogate, he jumped at it. Perdy took some convincing that it was a good idea but came round to the idea. Unfortunately Perdy had realised she'd made a mistake in returning to Grayson and not knowing about Katie's pregnancy, was about to leave. Katie then told her and Grayson the good news. Perdy told Matthew she did want to be with him but intended to stay with Grayson until after the baby was born. Unfortunately Grayson overheard Perdy and Matthew discussing this and, in revenge, decided to help Rosemary frame Matthew for her murder and Matthew was even arrested by the police for murder. He was released when Perdy blackmailed Grayson into taking a letter from Rosemary to the police, proving she was alive and well in Florida.
Perdy was disappointed when Katie chose to stay with Grayson, rather than go to Home Farm with her. She seemed to accept it but began talking down to Katie. Katie was unhappy about this and was annoyed to learn about Perdy blackmailing Grayson for sole custody in return for not telling the police that Grayson had helped to frame Matthew. In revenge, Katie and Grayson pretended to have fallen out so Katie could spend more time with Perdy. Eventually Katie convinced Perdy to burn the cardigan she was keeping as evidence against Grayson. Katie then revealed that she and Grayson were together and intended to raise the baby themselves. Perdy was so angry that she and Katie had a fight and Katie ended up in hospital, fearing she would lose the baby. She didn't but came close. Not surprisingly after that, Katie did not want to see Perdy. Matthew was confused by why Perdy and Katie had suddenly started fighting. He asked Perdy what happened but Perdy wouldn't explain so Grayson did, telling Matthew not only why Katie and Perdy had been fighting but that Perdy had known about Grayson framing him. He was so angry, he threw Perdy out of Home Farm.
On Katie's return from hospital, Perdy revealed Grayson had constantly cheated on her during their marriage. Grayson had no choice but to confess that Perdy was telling the truth. To Grayson's relief, Katie stayed with him but warned Grayson she would leave if he cheated on her.
Following Katie's next scan, which she and Grayson attended alone, the midwife told them the baby is a boy. Perdy was angry that they had gone to a scan without her and told Diane before her about the baby being a boy, she lost her temper and attacked Grayson. Paul and Jonny removed her from the Woolpack, Grayson followed and told her that he and Paul had slept together. Perdy then attacked Grayson again and Grayson had her arrested for assault. Following her release from the police station the next day, Perdy left the village, feeling she had no friends left.
Katie and Grayson were happy together and even got engaged. Meanwhile, Perdy had been to a solicitor about her rights to the baby. The solicitor went to see Grayson and gave Grayson Perdy's address so they could sort it out themselves. Grayson visited Perdy and was surprised to find her living in a grotty little flat - feeling sorry for her, he paid for her to move to a nicer flat and agreed to talk to Katie about allowing Perdy access to the baby. Initially Katie was against the idea but changed her mind. Grayson didn't know that Katie knew he had been seeing Perdy behind her back. Katie was so angry, she planned to have an elective caesarean and give the baby to Social Services for adoption elsewhere, feeling that the baby deserved better parents than Perdy and Grayson.
Shortly before the birth, Katie persuaded Grayson to give her £20,000. She claimed it was to help her mother pay her debts but it was actually to fund her trip to London for the birth. Katie told Jonny about her plan and he told Paul, in confidence. Paul was horrified and went to see Grayson. He didn't actually tell Grayson about Katie's plans but he made Grayson suspicious of Katie so he did some checking and discovered that Katie had moved the date of her caesarean. He confronted her at Home Farm and with Jonny's help, she managed to escape but realised she was in labour. With Matthew and Perdy's help, Katie gave birth to Perdy and Grayson's son on the back seat of Matthew's car.
Leaving storyline
Grayson was left seething when Perdy and Katie put their differences behind them and Katie gave the baby to Perdy. Perdy left the village with her newborn son, leaving Grayson with nothing, but swore revenge on Matthew King for helping the girls with their plan. He later ambushed Katie in an attempt to get her to tell him where Perdy was, but Katie escaped after shutting his fingers in the door and running free. Paul Lambert was on the scene and punched Grayson twice for breaking up his civil partnership with Johnny Foster. After a huge scene in the village, where local officers Donna Windsor-Dingle and Ross Kirk pulled up, Grayson demanded to have Paul charged with assault, but with him having alienated so many in the village, nobody gave a witness statement to the assault.
Ostracized, Grayson left the village the following day.
Return
Grayson returned in September, holding Katie and Matthew hostage, demanding to know where his son is. When Jimmy and Carl later showed up, he (non-fatally) shot the latter before the former and Matthew finally wrestled the gun off him. Katie called the police and, just as he was being led away, Matthew gave Grayson a photo of Perdy and his son, for which Grayson thanked him.
