The Assistant (1957, ISBN 0374504849) is Bernard Malamud's second novel.

The Assistant was a reality television show parody of The Apprentice which aired on MTV. It featured comedian Andy Dick's search for a new personal assistant. Twelve contestants vied for the position with one being eliminated weekly. Dick made them perform absurd tasks such as bringing him coffee by traversing on a beam over a swimming pool, breaking up with his girlfriend, or attempting to get Dick a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
