Skoal tobacco is a dipping tobacco, marketed as smokeless tobacco. Skoal has been produced by US Smokeless Tobacco since 1934.
Cuts and Flavors
Skoal is a shredded tobacco product. It is known as Moist Snuff or American Snuff. Skoal is packaged in 1.2 oz tins. It is available in two textures, Fine Cut and Long Cut. It is also available in Pouches and "Bandits", both of which are about the size of a US Nickel and teabag-like. Skoal was originally produced in only wintergreen flavor[1] , but now comes in many different flavors, which vary by cut, including:
- Mint (Long, Pouches, Bandits)
- Wintergreen (Long, Fine, Pouches, Bandits)
- Straight (Long, Fine, Pouches)
- Classic (Long)
- Spearmint (Long)
- Cherry (Long)
- Berry Blend (Long, Pouches)
- Vanilla (Long)
- Apple Blend (Long, Pouches)
- Peach (Long)
- Citrus Blend (Long, Pouches)
New* Blueberry (Long)
- Skoal Edge, a strong Wintergreen (Long)
- Frost, cooling wintergreen. (long) (discontinued)
- Skoal Snus, available in Citrus Blend, Mint and Cinnamon.
- Skoal Dry pouches (Regular, Menthol, Cinnamon). Discontinued in 2008[citation needed].
Skoal Dry was discontinued and replaced with Skoal Snus to compete with Camel's snus products.
Contrary to belief[citation needed], there is no watermelon flavor currently available. Skoal will most likely not be producing any new flavors, rather, they might do similar things to what the have done with wintergreen, such as making flavors bolder.
History
Skoal was introduced in 1934 as a wintergreen-flavored smokeless tobacco.[1] United States Tobacco introduced Skoal Bandits in 1983, and Skoal long cut smokeless tobacco in 1984.[1] In 2007, Skoal Dry, tobacco pouches that do not require spitting, were introduced into the U.S. market. Skoal Snus was launched in 2008 to take place of Skoal Dry, which has been discontinued[citation needed].
Popularity
According to HealthPolitics.org, Skoal tobacco is the most popular brand of dipping tobacco in the United States with a 30% marketshare.[2]
