Blitzball
Blitzball is a fictitious, vaguely rugby-like sport played by characters in two games of the Final Fantasy video game series, Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2. It is heavily based on the Captain Tsubasa video game series. It is an underwater game, played in a large sphere of water. In the interest of sportsman-like conduct, even races of Spira who might normally not get along with each other are allowed to compete. It is Spira's favorite sport, allowing fans to take their minds off the ever present threat of Sin, and the only mainstream form of entertainment. Interestingly, many teams seem to be co-ed. Two of the game's main characters, Tidus and Wakka, are skilled blitzball players.
Teams are made up of six players a side, of whom one is the goalkeeper. The players swim around, throwing a dimpled ball called the Blitzball to each other in order to throw it into the opponent's goal area, thus scoring a goal. The team with the most goals after two five-minute halves is declared the winner. Also, if a team leads the game by seven goals at any point, they automatically win. As your players advance through the ranks they learn many new tricks to improve both their offensive and defensive skills.
How exactly the teams manage to hold their breath for such long periods of time is a source of either amusement or confusion among players. Though never stated in the game, it is probable that this ability is the result of serious training on the part of the players, much in the same way that marathon runners train their bodies to be able to run for long distances. In Eternal Calm, a short film set two years after the conclusion of Final Fantasy X, Yuna notes that after much practice and training from Wakka, she is able to hold her breath for over two minutes.

Name: Tidus
Contract: Besaid Aurochs, Left Forward
Scouting Location: Nowhere
Key Techniques: Venom Tackle, Drain Tackle, Anti-Venom 2
LV:02 HP:0132 SP:60 EN:10 AT:03 PA:03 BL:02 SH:10 CA:01
LV:30 HP:1609 SP:62 EN:30 AT:09 PA:14 BL:07 SH:33 CA:07
LV:60 HP:4429 SP:64 EN:52 AT:15 PA:27 BL:12 SH:55 CA:13
LV:99 HP:9999 SP:67 EN:80 AT:23 PA:49 BL:19 SH:78 CA:20
As shown above, Tidus has the perfect stats for a forward, but doesn't excel in much else. He can't stand his ground as a defender, as his attack and block are too low, and your going to have to rely on Tidus's endurance rather than his passing, as his low pass won't get him far. One of the best things about Tidus is his very powerful techs, Jecht Shot, and Jecht Shot 2. The Jecht Shot knocks away two defenders, and adds five shot to Tidus's shot stat. Jecht Shot 2 knocks away three defenders, and is an Invisible Shot (meaning you can aim the ball for more certainty of scoring).
Name: Datto
Contract: Besaid Aurochs, Right Forward
Key Techniques: Wither Shot, Anti-Venom, Wither Shot 2
LV:01 HP:0090 SP:60 EN:12 AT:02 PA:04 BL:02 SH:08 CA:01

LV:99 HP:8567 SP:90 EN:65 AT:26 PA:34 BL:26 SH:62 CA:20
Datto is another average forward. His speed is very high, and, coupled with decent shot and endurance stats, Datto could be an effective scorer. However, his stats aren't very elite, and some of them are just plain low! His essential stats are a little lower than they should be, and the unnecessary ones are a tad on the low side. His starting stats make him a hard blitzer to level up, so he may lag behind your others.

Poison: Venom Techniques poisong the target, accelerating his/her HP loss while he/she has the ball, and impeding HP recovery. When afflicting with Pile Venom, a player loses shooting techniques first, followed by tackling and passing techniques. Sleep: Nap techniques will put the target to sleep. The target's mini-map marker turns black to indicate this. Sleeping players awaken after a certain amount of time elapses, if a goal is scored, or after being hit by a pass. Wither: Each Wither technique reduces one attribute of the target by half. Affected attributes are colored blue instead of yellow. The effect wears off over time or at the end of the half.

In Literature
Blitzball was also a game that the fictional character Finny created in A Separate Peace. Finny names it after the German Blitzkrieg. In the game, players try to reach the watchtower without getting tackled, thus losing posession of the ball. Players may pass the ball before they get tackled, but that of who the ball is passed to may refuse the ball, also known as the "Lepellier Refusal".
