The Coral are a British band formed in 1996 in Hoylake in the Wirral near Liverpool.

Line-Up

The band is formed from neighbourhood friends:-

History

The Coral have released 3 full-length albums - their self titled debut The Coral, its follow up Magic and Medicine and their most recent The Invisible Invasion, as well as a 'mini-album' Nightfreak and the Sons of Becker. All their albums besides their most recent were produced by The Lightning Seeds singer/songwriter Ian Broudie.

The band play an unusual style of music which is a mixture of old fashioned country and folk music and modern rock. Their music is often used in the soundtrack to many TV adverts and programmes making their music well known even though the band themself are still outside of the mainstream. Although they have a fan base in the North American market, and a rather large following in their home country, they have yet to achieve a mainstream audience.

Their music has been featured on the television show Scrubs.

The Coral are signed to the Deltasonic record label along with other acts, generally from or based in Liverpool, such as The Zutons, The Dead 60s and The Basement.

Quick Facts

  • The record label "Deltasonic" was created by ex-Shack drummer, Alan Wills because he was so impressed by The Coral and was quick to sign them.
  • The debut, self titled album of 2002 was nominated for The Mercury Music Prize the day after release.
  • Vocalist/Guitarist, James Skelly was amazed at how his fans do not recognise him after sitting next to one, at a Liverpool football match, who had been telling his friends how much he liked one of their songs.
