The Alexandra Palace transmitter (grid reference TQ297901) is one of the oldest television transmitters in the world; high definition (405-line) broadcasts have taken place from this mast between 1936 (with a short break for WWII) and 1985 when VHF television was phased out leaving only the PAL system running on UHF. The mast is 188 metres in height. Analogue television for northern London is actually provided by Crystal Palace - see BBC TV Transmitters.

The transmitter is owned and maintained by Crown Castle UK.
