Tân Son Nh?t International Airport is Vietnam's largest international airport. Its IATA code is SGN, which is derived from Ho Chi Minh City's former name, Saigon. It cooperates with Southern Airports Services Company (SASCO).

History

During the Vietnam War, the airport (then written as Tân Son Nh?t was an important air base for the United States and South Vietnamese air forces.

On December 9, 2004, United Airlines became the first U.S. airline to fly to Vietnam since Pan Am's last flight during the Fall of Saigon. UA869 (a Boeing 747-400) landed at Ho Chi Minh City, which was a continuation of United's San FranciscoHong Kong service.

International Airports

Along with Tan Son Nhat, these airports have custom facilities and serve international flights.

Domestic Airports

Smaller airports handle local or intra-regional flights as most have runways less than 10,000 feet and sometime unpaved. As well, they have no custom facilities for international flights.

Military Airports

Notes: Since Cam Ranh Airport was used for commercial flights, Nha Trang Airport has been solely used for military operations and training. All commercial flights that previously headed to Nha Trang Airport are transfered to Cam Ranh Airport. The main reason behind is that Nha Trang Airport located within the city of Nha Trang, so its runway cannot be extended anymore.
