Ed, Edd n Eddy is an animated series created by Danny Antonucci and produced by a.k.a. Cartoon for the Cartoon Network. The premise is that three friends—named Ed, Edd, and Eddy (collectively known as "the Eds")—hang around in their suburban neighborhood of Peach Creek Estates. Led by Eddy, the Eds scheme to make money off their peers, but their plans usually fail, leaving them in various predicaments. The characters almost never leave the neighborhood, and adults are nowhere to be found.
The series, which was Cartoon Network's fifth Cartoon Cartoon, was first aired in 1999 and has since attracted millions of fans worldwide. Originally, there were to be only four seasons; Cartoon Network, however, has ordered two more seasons of Ed, Edd n Eddy, bringing the series' length to six seasons. There are also three holiday specials: Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine's Day.
A DVD named Edifying Ed-Ventures, containing six episodes and several bonus features, was released on May 10, 2005.
Characters
Ed
The least intelligent of the Eds, Ed is the workhorse of the group. He is known for his strange interests that usually involve buttered toast, gravy, and chickens. His mind is a subculture grab bag full of comic books and monster movies. Despite his larger size, Ed is utterly at the mercy of his tyrannical younger sister Sarah and is an easy target for her emotional blackmail techniques. Much to the dismay of germophobe Edd, he has zero personal hygiene—he's even terrified of soap—and is blessed with the type of superhuman strength Baby Huey has. Ed is prone to doing what championship weight lifters in their prime could not do, such as lifting building structures, cars, and even the sidewalk. His actual first name is Edwin, revealed in "Hand Me Down Ed."Due to general information, he's 12 years old.
Edd
An inventor, neat freak, and the brains of the group. Sarcastic as of late. He is never seen without his trademark black hat with a white stripe, hence the nickname Sockhead. To differentiate his spoken name from that of Ed's, everyone calls him Double-D. He has a remarkably large collection of ants. His parents put a heavy workload upon him, communicating tasks solely through a multitude of sticky notes. His first and middle names are Edward (often misspelled as Eddward) and Marion, respectively. It is hinted in "The Ed-Touchables" that Sarah did have a crush on Edd , though, he tends to stay away from her. Contrary to popular belief, he does not wear an Adidas hat, but rather a sock, which he uses to hide a disturbing secret, and the only other people who know about it are Ed and Eddy. It could be however, that Edd may have a receeding hairline. He is so nerdy because, he hates sports. Ever since the "Dodgeball Incedent". Edd was the last of the three to join the group, as Ed and Eddy had known each other before they met Edd.
Eddy
An incompetent juvenile con artist and unofficial leader of the Eds. Eddy is a complete sucker for jawbreakers at the local candy store and goes to any and all lengths to scam the other kids for money, even at the expense of his friends' credibility. Due to his being short, he has an inferiority complex. Eddy is bitter rivals with almost every other character on the show, but primarily Kevin, Sarah, and his former protege, Jimmy. It is often Eddy's swaggering over-confidence that causes the failure of the Eds plans. His middle name is Skipper. And his last name is also yet to be known. Eddy has a very unhidden love afair with money also, and was nearly driven insane when had no one to fleece in one episode, when everyone but the ed's were under quarrantine. He loves his retro styled room, especially his record player.
Sarah
A spoiled brat of a sister who acts cute and charming when it serves her. Sarah has Ed's unending loyalty and obedience, mostly through threats of her tattling on him. She almost always hangs out with Jimmy, and when she's not, she rushes to his aid the moment he calls her. It has been hinted in several episodes that she has a crush on Edd, more than likely because he gives her a flower in "An Ed Too Many."
Jimmy
A highly effeminate, "aspiring" artist, Jimmy likes playing dollies with Sarah. He can be more manipulative and conniving (and much more successful) than Eddy when given motivation. Jimmy is quite accident-prone, and there are few episodes where he isn't seen with bandages. However, he can be quite crafty, and once framed the Eds (mostly because of Eddy) for wrecking a friendship monument (a giant paper-mache heart). Also a member of Rolf's Urban Rangers. Jimmy claims that his father, who may think his son is too girly, forces him to practice hockey. Jimmy has shown how deeply attached he is to Sarah when someone tries to take her away from him. His last name is Vernon.
Rolf
of foreign culture (believed to be German or French but almost certainly from the Alps) with odd customs, owns a small farm within the cul-de-sac, leads a scouting group called the Urban Rangers (consisting of himself, Jonny, Jimmy, and Plank), and is the son of a shepherd, which he calls himself often. His faithful pets are a pig named Wilfred, a goat named Victor, a cow, and several chickens. Mostly hangs out with Kevin, playing sports and hardly minds the Eds, except in times in many of their scams, in which he uses his brute force. Wishes to be a barber when he grows up.
Jonny 2x4
has a big head, frequently gets on the other kids' nerves, likes collecting clams, believes Plank sees things, and talks also. He is member of Rolf's Urban Rangers, as is Jimmy. Seems to like trees. Jonny has a somewhat heroic streak, shown best in "Robbin Ed". Due to his large head, Jonny is often found dangling from trees, and, since he sends Plank for help, he typically waits hours for assistance. He doesn't seem to mind the antics of the Eds and sometimes seems to enjoy them. Almost NEVER seen without plank.
Plank
a piece of plywood with drawn-on eyes and mouth; Jonny's best friend. While immobile and silent simultaneously, he is often able to have an effect on the kids through strange and elaborate coincidences. Plank is reminiscent of Stump from The Angry Beavers. It appears that Plank communicates telepathically, having no real mouth. He has also been known to be able to move on his own, though this is never actually seen. Plank was a canidate in Cartoon Networks "play" Presidential election. plank lost, being an easy target for jokes, and never uttered a word when asked questions by the media. Plank also has a mother and father that both died when Eddy took them on a overly priced tour around the Cul de Sac. For revenge, Plank sent the wood mafia to attack the Eds at the end of the cartoon.
Nazz
the trendy and totally attractive girl in the cul-de-sac who mostly hangs out with Kevin and does not mind the Eds at times. All of the boys except Rolf and Jimmy have a crush on her, and when she approaches, they lose the ability to speak coherently. Kevin and Eddy are typically the ones battling it out for Nazz's affection. Nazz plays the tuba very poorly, but when she plays the boys say otherwise. She babystis Eddy in one episode, but Eddy thought it was a date. As an effect, Eddy was left very embarrased by the situation and stayed in his room until the party was over. It was revealed in a recent episode that she used to be tremendously obese.
Kevin
the "cool" kid on the block, hates the Eds (especially Eddy, but he seems to like Double D and is fairly neutral toward Ed) calls them dorks, watches 60 Minutes, has a garage full of jawbreakers (his father works at a jawbreaker factory). Kevin is often seen riding or customizing his bike, skateboards, and snowboards (when there's snow). When not riding his trusty bike, hangs with Rolf in the lane. Eddy often taunts Kevin about his large chin. Gym assistant at Peach Creek High. Typically an allaround jock, he seems to like all kinds of sports activities. He is a "polar opposite" of Jimmy.
Kanker Sisters
May(blonde), Marie(blue hair) and Lee(redhead) have crushes on Ed, Edd, and Eddy, respectively; live in the nearby Park n' Flush trailer park. They are feared by all the other kids who live in the cul-de-sac, especially the Eds and Kevin, for their brash and uninhibited demeanor.May and and Double-D fell in love in the valintine episode once they were shot by Sara's and Jimmy's bow. The Sisters fight often and are almost as astonishingly strong as Ed. Eddy wears their fathers robe in one episode.
Eddy's brother
According to Eddy, his brother was the coolest kid in the cul-de-sac and went away to college. Kevin is scared of Eddy's brother's thinking he's a dork, Rolf thinks Eddy's brother wants to steal his chickens, Jonny looks up to Eddy's brother, and Nazz has a crush on him. He is never shown on screen, but Eddy makes passing references to him when one of his ideas are inspired by him.
Nana
Like Eddy's brother, Rolf's Nana is "heard" about—never seen. Often yelled for by Rolf and seems to be the only adult close enough to be noticed. Also, Rolf makes brief, but wacky comments about his Nana in some episodes. In one episode Eddy says there is a hairy beast eating all buffet, and Rolf turns back to look and says "Nana?".
Trivia
- Ed, Edd n Eddy was unusual in that it was animated wholly using traditional cel animation, while most cartoons are now animated using 2D computer animation. The use of painted cels lasted up to the end of the 4th season: Though the show is entirely hand-drawn, all cels are colored digitally. (This is due to the fact that no animation studio paints cels anymore.) It was the last major cartoon to use painted cels.
- Much akin to the theme in Peanuts, the number of characters in Ed, Edd n Eddy is "fixed": no adults or other characters other than those already in play ever appear in the show. The entire adult world is a set of hidden characters. Occasionally, a vehicle will enter the small universe the show is set in, and it can be presumed that an adult is driving, although they are never seen. The character who comes closest to ever being seen is Rolf's Nana, whom he sometimes talks to (although she never talks back). In addition, Santa Claus made a cameo on the Christmas special to give the kids their gifts, but he flew away shortly after appearing, Also we see Eddy's Father's arm and Ed's Mom's arm in Mission Ed-Possible.
- The letters "AKA," which is the abbreviation for the name of the company that produces the show, frequently appear in the show. The words have been seen on license plates, magazines, and other things.
- Several errors in the first four individual episodes—off-key music, dissappearing outlines, and a fuzzy picture—were fixed for later airings.
- Jawbreakers, the candy all the characters love, are huge candy spheres as big as (sometimes bigger than) the characters' heads (in contrast to real life, where large jawbreakers fit easily into the palm of a hand).
- Television is an odd matter in the series. Typically, the only thing on is a movie that is identified in "Nagged to Ed" as Fishbowl 2 ("A classic!"), which consists of live-action paper fish being moved around on sticks and several unnamed monster movies. In another episode, in which the characters play hide and seek, Ed hides inside the television set in the same setting as a cartoon character resembling Felix the Cat.
- All the episode titles (except for the holiday specials) are popular sayings with an important word replaced with the word "Ed." (E.g., "Knock, Knock, Who's Ed?" and "Wish You Were Ed.") An exception to this is a two-part episode named "If the Shoe Fits", in which the Eds are forced to clear their name after being falsely accused of ruining the cul-de-sac's Friendship Day celebration.
- Most of the episodes begin with something completely unrelated to the storyline of the episode. This is to emphasize the randomness of childhood.[1]
- In Brazil, the show is aired as Du, Dudu e Edu. In Spanish, the show's name is Ed, Edd y Eddy. In Polish, the show's title is Ed, Edd i Eddy.
- The Eds made a cameo in the Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends episode "Eddie Monster", although they were stylized for that particular series.
- There are several instances in which the fourth wall is almost broken:
- Double D comments: "That's what we do on every show, but not like this!"
- Ed says: "I should have the feeling back in my feet after a word from our sponsors, guys!"
- In another episode Eddy refers to Jonny, saying: "Man, does this guy sleep through the whole show?"
- When talking about a past episode, Eddy remarks: "Oh yeah! Didn't we win an Emmy for that show?"
- In another episode, Ed says "End of scene and fade to black."
- In another episode, Kevin declares, "This show needs subtitles."
- Eddy claims Kevin did something, but Double D replies: "But Kevin wasn't in this show, Eddy!"
- Eddy: "I'd swear, but standards won't let me."
- Eddy: "Show's over. Take five."
- Eddy: "We're going to make the scene!"
- Double D: "I think I've lost about 10 pounds this season"
- Ed: "I remember it like it was last season"
- In the episode "Knock Knock Ed," Double D offers the Eds to go to either his or Eddy's house as an easy way to solve the episode's conflict of finding a TV to watch. Eddy rejects the idea, saying "What? And ruin the plot?"
- Peach Creek, which is where the cul-de-sac is, shares the name of a real-life neighborhood a wee bit west of Kingsland, Georgia.
- Edd has an ant farm of 5,239 ants. (In series 1, it was 4,837)
