Mu Online
MU Online is a 3D MMORPG produced by Korean company Webzen.
Story
Mu Online tells that the continent of Mu, ruled by great emperors, has fallen into war between its many feudal lords. Antonidas, one of these lords, was deceived to bring a terrible demon on the continent. All the lords were killed, and without any successive ruler, the continent's hope now remains with adventurers, that they may join their forces, defeat the demon, and restore proper peace to the continent.
The game world is based on James Churchward's book The Lost Continent of MU. Mu is one of the continents that supposedly vanished under the seas, like Lemuria and Atlantis. The gameplay in Mu Online is very much like the gameplay in Diablo II.
Outlaws and Heroes
PvP fighting is possible in this game, but discouraged. When one player attacks another, a Self-defense system is activated, in which the attacked player may kill the aggressor within a time limit (roughly 30 seconds) of the last blow. Self-defense is also activated when a player attacks an Elf's summoned creature. If one player kills another without Self-defense active, he/she becomes an Outlaw. Outlaws have disadvantages during game play, depending on his Outlaw level.
Outlaw Warning: A normal player assumes this level after killing another without Self-defense. The character’s name becomes orange, and there is a chance that you will drop items when killed. If attacked, you will still have Self-defense. If you kill another person within 3 hours of gaining this status, you will advance to Outlaw 1st Stage; otherwise, you will go back to normal.
Outlaw 1st Stage: On this level the character’s name becomes red, and the character's body darkens. The chance of dropping items upon death increases, and players can attack you without activating Self-defense. Also, the Non-Player Character shops will refuse to sell any items to you. If three hours pass without a kill, you drop to Outlaw Warning, but another kill within that period advances you to Outlaw 2nd Stage.
Outlaw 2nd Stage (aka "Murderers"): On this level the chance of dropping items at death is 50%. Players can target you as if you were a monster, and without activating Self-defense. This stage is dangerous as there is an incentive for players to become Heroes (listed below.) A Stage 2 Outlaw becomes almost totally black in color, and his wings and weapon (if any) become a crimson red. As soon as this stage is reached, a timer is set at 3 hours, and increases by 3 hours for every person you kill. Rumor has it the maximum time limit is 99 hours, although this is not confirmed. When the timer reaches 0, you revert to Outlaw 1st Stage.
Hero: A Hero is a character that has killed three or more 1st or 2nd Stage Outlaws since logging into the account. The Heroes have no chance of dropping items at death, and it is rumored that chance of success on the Chaos Machine and at finding Jewels is increased. The Hero status clears in one hour, though the timer can be built up for every Murderer killed. The actual ratio of time increase to Murderers killed is unknown, however.
To clear Outlaw status, the character must wait a significant amount of time without killing. The wait can be shortened by killing large number of monsters, which is generally done in one of the servers that does not permit PvP attacks. The exact relationship between the amount of monsters killed and the reduced time within Outlaw status would need to be experimentally measured. There are also rumors that the wait is shortened by waiting in the Church building in Devias.
Character Classes
At the start of the game the players can chose between three different character classes. Each class has its specific powers and items, making no class truly "better" than the other, and all three are typically used to their fullest extent when grouped together. Later on in the game, the player can create characters of special classes that are stronger than the first three.
Dark Knight (DK) - The Dark Knight, shortened DK, is the most popular character, most likely because of its focus on pure physical combat. Younger, less intelligent, and immature players are stereotyped with this class, however. Dark Knights are also more apt to become Murderers, due to a perception of raw, brute strength in the player, coupled with the stereotype mentioned earlier. Dark Knights have naturally high HP, great weapons, and the best armor. This makes them well-equipped to be the primary attacker in a party, and coupled with the "buff" of an Elf, is a mighty force indeed. Lower level DKs generally apply their stat points as they "level up" to Strength with some stat points applied to Agility.
Blade Knight (BK) – After completing the game’s first quest, the Dark Knights "evolve" into Blade Knights, which have stronger stats and are able to use greater weapons and armor than those of Dark Knights.
Dark Wizard (DW) – The Dark Wizard specializes in offensive magic and can kill from a distance. Although able to handle some weapons used by Dark Knights, the Dark Wizard's weak armor and slow growth in "strength" makes this impractical. Instead, they wield magical staves, which increase the offensive power of their spells. A well-developed Dark Wizard can cause massive damage with the "Nova" spell, hitting with over 5000 points of damage, far higher than most Dark Knights can achieve. Dark Wizards, however, have the least defensive power available to any of the other classes, which makes physical combat difficult for any level. They are useful in parties, however, being able to hit from a distance with powerful spells. Lower level DWs must make a difficult choice in applying stat points: they need to grow their Energy stats in order to cast higher level spells, but need sufficient Strength in order to wield more powerful staffs and wear higher level armor.
Soul Master (SM) – After completing the game’s first quest, the Dark Wizards "evolve" into Soul Masters, who can use mighty and awe inspiring spells, and can equip better armor.
Elf – Elves specialize in long-ranged combat and defensive magic. Because of the lack of synergy between their fighting and magical skills, they have been developed over time into two separate playing styles, not acknowledged by the game itself but by the players. The "Agility Elf (AE)" focuses her stats on Agility and Strength, in that order. This allows them to use the strongest bows and crossbows, and cause great amounts of damage out of harm's way. Because of their ability to attack far away from an enemy's melee attack, Agility Elves are great at fighting by themselves, but are also included in parties for that extra bit of damage. The "Energy Elf (EE)", focus her attention on the Energy stat, allowing them to use monster summons and three brands of defensive spell: "Heal," "Greater Defense" (aka "aura") and "Greater Damage" (aka "buff".) These three spells make them invaluable to a party, allowing the top attacking players to cause more damage and receive less. Some players combine both styles, naming themselves "Hybrid Elves." She will have a high Agility in order to equip strong weapons and kill by herself, but also a greater Energy stat to make herself useful in parties.
Muse Elf – After finishing the game’s first quest, the Elves "evolve" into Muse Elves, who are stronger and can use more powerful armor and weapons.
Magic Gladiators (MG) – The MG is a combination of DK and DW, and can be unlocked as a new class when your character reaches level 220. He cannot wear his own helm, and has three sets of his own specific armor (Hurricane, Storm Crow, and Thunder) though he can also wear the armor of a DK or DW (but not those of a BK or SM.) Following the example set by Elves, Magic Gladiators tend to split into two groups, focusing on either magical prowess or physical might. The difference is less noticeable in Global Mu, as new "Strength MG" skills, weapons and armor have only just been released. However, MG's get 7 stat points per level, as opposed to the 5 gained by the three other classes.
Dark Lord (DL) – Dark Lord, decendent of the great ruler Muren, is the all powerful "Daddy" of classes. Forget the Mother -> Child, class tree, this is the Daddy -> Child, class tree of Mu, and hence his power proves this. Using his pets, the Dark Horse and Dark Spirit, he can overwhelm any class with shear brute force. With the defence of a DK, the strength of several mages, and the inginuity of elves - this character truely is the Lord, and is worshipped by Mu users. His pets have their own "Level Up" system, and indeed their own skills. The "Dark Horse" creates an Earthquake by stamping, and is a true spectacle. The "Dark Spirit", is an eagle that soars above the Dark Lords head, he can use both of these at the same time - THE DARK SPIRIT COUNTS AS A SHIELD!. Which means, the Dark Lord can use his Horse (gives defence, power, and a new skill), his cape (substitute of wings and allows him to fly- gives power and defence +absorb and many other attributes) AND his Eagle, which comes with defensive, offensive, stationary and controlled attack skills. The darklords armour is also truely awe inspiring. The Dark Lord arrives with the 0.99b+ server package, available in China, Japan, Korea and the Phillipines and soon, Global.
Character Stats
Every character has four basic statistics: Strength, Agility, Vitality, and Energy. When you gain enough experience points and level up, you can distribute 5 points freely among these stats. Magic Gladiator characters gain 7 points instead of 5, and Dark Lord characters gain 9 points.
Strength - This is your character's physical strength. The more you invest in this stat, the more damage you'll deal when striking with a melee weapon. Higher strength allows your character to equip stronger armor and weapons.
Agility - This measures the character's dexterity. Agility increases your chance of hitting and your defense. Whereas Strength determines your melee damage, Agility determines damage from a Bow or Crossbow. Some weapons require large numbers of Agility points, and every piece of Elf armor requires some.
Vitality - This is your character's toughness. Vitality gives your character extra HP.
Energy - This is the character's ability in working skills. Dark Wizards and Elves need large amounts of Energy to learn new spells, and Dark Knights to use their weapon skills more often. Investing points in Energy increases your maximum mana and mana recharging rate.
Command – This is a special stat that only Dark Lords have. It measures the ability the character has to handle the pets of nature.
Monsters
As in any RPG, MU is populated by a large variety of monsters, from simple ones like goblins to frightening ones such as the Elite Yeti or Gorgon. Each monster-type is unique, has different spawn points, and drops different items. For more information regarding monster types and descriptions, check out the * Official Global Webpage.
Special Monsters
Some monsters don't have a precise spawn point and appear randomly within the game. These monsters usually are golden and drop rare or important treasures when they are defeated. For example, on the global server we have the Golden Budge Dragon and the Golden Goblin. The first drops the Box of Luck and the latter drops the Box of Kundun +1. Both these monsters show up only within Lorencia, Noria or Devias.
Event Monsters
The server may be running an in-game event for extra fun. Sometimes special monsters created especially for these events will show up on certain maps, often carrying valuable items. When they show up, an announcement will display on the screen and adventurers have the opportunity to hunt down these monsters and defeat them. Different servers run different events.
Spells
Like most RPG games, characters in MU can use many different kinds of magic and special abilities. Each character has its own set of spells and some weapons may be chanted in order to provide the character with a specific spell. Casting a spell costs MP (mana, or magic points). Here follows a summary of spells that are available to characters:
Dark Knight Skills
- Twisting Slash Skill – The Dark Knight hits all the surrounding targets with a spinning attack.
- Impaling Skill – This skill can only be used when a Dark Knight is mounting an Uniria/Unicorn or Dinolant and when the knight is wielding a spear classed weapon. It's an attack charged with magical energy.
- Inner Strength or "Life Swelling" – This skill will increase the HP of all the people within the Dark Knight’s party on range.
- Blow – The Dark Knight will gather power and stab the enemy with great strength.
- Rageful Blow – The Dark Knight will throw the weapon up on the air, jump, grab it and strike the ground, causing it to crack and damaging all the enemies around.

- Penetration Skill - The Elf concentrates energy and fire a mana-covered arrow. The arrow's strength gets multiplied.
- Ice Arrow Skill - The Elf will shot an iced arrow, dealing a stronger damage and possibly freezing the target.

Item Stats
The availability of different types of items on MU is considered the most interesting feature of the game. Besides the normal item variety, items may contain special bonuses that are assigned almost randomly. Creating a 'perfect' item within the game is almost impossible, however private servers may make this more accessible to players. Since items can be so different, it's quite common to have your own custom armor.
Item Level
The item can have different levels ranging from 0 to 13 on the global servers and often going further on other servers. The item will have a dim or strong surrounding glow depending on its level. While a higher level item is stronger than a lower level item, it will also require more strength to be used.
Example: Bill of Balrog +4, Elven Bow +2, etc.
- Level 1 and 2 items won't glow. The item will look normal.
- Level 3 and 4 items will glow a dim red light. Level 3 and 4 items still are common.
- Level 5 and 6 items will glow a dim blue light. Few level 5 items are dropped, so most are upgraded with jewels.
- Level 7 and 8 items will glow a strong white light. You can only get one of these trough upgrading or trading.
- Level 9 items will glow a strong light. Depending on the item it will glow different colors.
- Level 10 items will glow the same as level 9 ones, but when the character stands still, small lights will fly around the character.
- Level 11 items will glow the same as level 10 ones. Together with the small lights, energy lines will be dancing around the character.
- Level 12 and 13 items will glow like level 11 ones and flash a blue light. Moreover, the small lights effect can now be customized as an aura around the character. The last level for normal items.
- Level 14 and 15 is only for excellent items. While there is no glow effect, the player becomes transparent to the background and possesses some kind of cloak.
Item Bonuses
Items may randomly have bonuses attached to them. These bonuses make the item stronger. These, different from the item levels, cannot be changed, and only luck will yield an item with nice bonuses. The levels are typically incremented +4,+8 and +12, but can range up to +28 on items and +35 on shields.
Example: Bill of Balrog +4+8, Elven bow +0+12
- Weapons: Increased damage. Each + is an amount of damage added to the attack.
- Armor: Increased defense. Just like weapons, but defense instead of damage.
- Shields: Increased defense rate. The higher the defense rate, the easier for your character to dodge attacks.
Excellent Items (described further below) have special bonuses that are much more powerful than regular bonuses, and sometimes special attributes (like reflecting damage or increasing the HP limit).
Other Item Types
Excellent Items - Having a +11+15 item is not the best a character can have. Very special and rare items, called excellent items, can give an extra and powerful boost to your items. An excellent item will glow the colors of a rainbow. An excellent item will have additional properties (more defense or more damage), may have a special bonus, and (with some luck) they can deal 110% your normal damage on some attacks. An excellent item can advance through different levels just as a normal item would.
Example: Excellent Elven Bow.
The bonuses for excellent weapons are:
- Excellent damage rate +10%
- Increase wizardry dmg +level/20
- Increase wizardry dmg +2%
- Increase attacking wizardry speed +7
- Increase life after monster + life/8
- Increase mana after monster + mana/8
and for excellent armor & shields:
- Defense success rate +10%
- Reflect damage +5%
- Damage decrease +4%
- Increase HP +4%
- Increase mana +4%
- Increase zen after hunt +40%
Luck Items - Gained through pure luck. If you're able to find one, this item will be easier to upgrade using jewels and, again, with some luck, you can gain a critical strike. Critical strikes hit with the max damage you can deal with that weapon and work the same way as an Excellent Strike.
Guardian Items - You can equip guardians to give your character a boost during battle. However they aren't cheap and they are disposable items. They have 255Hp when picked up and every time you are hit, the guardian loses 1 HP, no matter the damage dealt to you. . On the Korean server, the legendary character, Dark Lord, can have two pets that can recover and are used just like guardians.
- Angel - Increases your max HP by 50 points. Absorbs 20% damage dealt.
- Satan - Increases your attack by 30%. Your character loses 3HP everytime you score a hit.
- Uniria/Unicorn - Increases your defense rate (you dodge attacks more easily), and also makes you move hastily.
- Dinorant/Dinolant - Created by chaos combination, the Dinorant is an Uniria that can fly. It also increases your defense rate, moves quickly, and also allows you to get into Icarus when you don't have your own wings.
Jewels - These are the second most expensive, rare and useful items on MU. There are 5 different jewels, each one with its own use. According to the story, each of the jewels is a fragment of the sealing stone that held Kumdum before it shattered. Since the sealing stone shattered into 8 different parts, on the future the game will offer 8 different jewels.
- Jewel of Chaos - It lets you combine using the Chaos machine and is the most common. Combining Chaos with Bless and Soul upgrades your items to +10 and +11, however if fails it will revert to +0 and sometimes also reducing the attached bonus (if it hasone ). These are also used like currency.
- Jewel of Bless - Allows you to upgrade your items up to +6. It's chance of having success is 100%.
- Jewel of Soul - Allows you to upgrade your items up to +9. It can also upgrade +0 items, but unlike Bless, this jewel will work only 50% of the time. If the item has luck, this chance increases to 75%. If it fails, however, the item's level may drop by 1 level or if the item is +7 or +8 it will be returned to +0.
- Jewel of Life - A great jewel that can be used to bring the item level from +11 up to +16. It can also increase the option of the item.
- Jewel of Creation - Combining the Jewel of Creation with chaos may create a fruit (nut, nugget). This fruit, when eaten, will boost one of your stats. It's the rarest jewel.
Armor Sets
These are the armor sets that are used by the characters. The sets are made of Boots, Gloves, Pants, Armor and Helm. The Magic Gladiator can't use helms so his sets don't have helms.
It's the main way to know a character's power by look. An experienced level 140 character can hide among the low level ones if he/she doesn't use any expensive piece of armor.
Wearing a full set (all the equipment is made of the same armor set) will increase the defense rate.

- Double Poleax - The end of this poleax has sharp edges.
- Dragon Lance - It's not a popular weapon because they don't look appealing nor are very strong, and they are quickly replaced with

General Items
The most common items on the game. They usually are cheap and can be found about anywhere. Rings and Necklances/Pendants aren't stackable, so having two Rings of Poison only the strongest will work.
- Rings and Pendants – These items protect your character against certain elements that come from skills and monster attack. They may come with HP regeneration option, making them very useful items.
- Scroll of Town Portal - Using this item you'll be sent back to the closest safe area.
- Healing Potions - These will heal your HP.
- Mana Potions - These will recover your MP.
- Antidotes - These will cure poisoning, but since poison only last 10 seconds it's a very pointless item to have.
- Alcohol - It increases your attack speed on 25% for the next minute. Your character will turn red.
- Arrows - Ammo for Bows. Contains 255 arrows.
- Crossbow Bolts - Ammo for Crossbows. Contains 255 bolts.
- Fruit – Fruits are made with the Jewel of Creation. There is one fruit by character stat (except command), and when used the fruit will increase some points on the stat.
Boxes
These are rare items found on Golden Mods (Golden Budge Dragons, Golden Goblin, Golden lizzard king, etc). Once the item is dropped there's a chance of it turning into zen (money), a very good item (+4/+5 +option and maybe +luck), a rena, or, sadly, nothing. The Box of Kundum has larger chance of dropping items, and it usually drops Excelent type items.
- Box of Luck
- Box of Heaven
- Box of Kundum(+1)
- Box of Kundum(+2)
- Box of Kundum(+3)
- Box of Kundum(+4)

Wings
Wings are the most powerful, most expensive and rare items on the game. Wings allow the character to fly. They increase the Defense, Attack, Defense rate and may have their own options, they also allow entrace into Icarus. To use them the character must be of level 180, so it's an item reserved to the most dedicated players. They are manufactured on the chaos machine, and each class has it's own wing.
- Satan Wings (for Dark Knights)
- Angel Wings (for Dark Wizards)
- Fairy Wings (for Elves)
Magic Gladiators can use both Satan and Angel wings.
The wings have durability, and once it's used up, the wing vanishes, and another must be made.

Events
Blood Castle
Blood Castle is an event where players must rescue the fallen angel's weapon. To get to the castle, the player must first get an invisibility cloak. This is made by obtaining a scroll of archangel and a blood fang. The scroll of archangel and the blood fang can be +1,+2,+3,+4 or +5. These must go into the Chaos combination machine along with a Jewel of Chaos and some zen. If the combination is successful, you will get an invisibility cloak. The resulting invisibility cloak will correspondingly be +1 to +5 depending on the level of items combined. Each level of the cloak will let the player fight varying levels of monsters.+1 will let you fight weak monsters, while +5 items will release incredinly tough monsters. It is advised to go in with a party(all with individual cloaks of the same level) while enering with a +5 cloak as,no matter your level, you will probably die very quickly against the +5 monsters. The player then needs to go to Davias, where he/she will need to find the angel messenger. If he says you have came too early, right click on the cloak and it will tell you how long until you can enter the castle. When the time comes, the angel messenger will let you enter, and you will find yourself at a start of a bridge. Soon the invasion will start. On the bridge, the players in the event will have to kill 40 monsters for every player. Once these have been killed, you need to go to the end of the bridge and destroy the gate. Get inside and kill two spirit beasts for each player in the castle, the destroy the crystal statue and take the weapon. Go all the way back to the start and talk to the fallen angel. If you have the weapon, she will reward you with two jewels of chaos, zen and some experience. It will end.
Chaos Castle
