Flight Lieutenant (said: Flight Leftenant, see lieutenant) is a junior commissioned rank in the Royal Air Force and air forces of many Commonwealth countries. It ranks above Flying Officer and immediately below Squadron Leader

It has a NATO ranking code of OF-2 equivalent to a US Navy Lieutenant or a Captain in the US Army or Marines.

While it does not always apply, a Flight Lieutenant often commands a flight of aircraft, three or four of which form a squadron.

The rank insignia consists of two narrow blue bands on sligthly wider black bands This is worn on both the lower sleeve of the tunic. Shoulder insignia is used on flying suits or fatigues.
