Sven Hedin (February 16, 1865 (Stockholm) - November 26, 1952 (Stockholm)), European explorer. Between 1886 and 1892 he studied geology, mineralogy, zoology, and Latin in Stockholm, Uppsala, Berlin, and Halle. Between his graduation in 1892 and 1935 he leads several expeditions to Persia and Central Asia. In 1902 he is the last Swede ever to be enobled with a hereditary title.

Sven Hedin supported and admired the Nazis and Adolf Hitler before and during the Third Reich.

Expeditions

  • 1885-1886 First journey to Peria
  • 1892 Second journey to Persia
  • 1893-1897 Expedition to Central Asia lasting four years
  • 1899-1902 Second expedition to Central Asia (Gobi Desert)
  • 1905-1909 Third expedition to Central Asia. Hedin visits the Kewir Desert and is the first to realise that the Himalaya is a single mountain range.
  • 1926-1935 The so-called Sino-Swedish Expedition is Hedin's last journey to Central Asia.
