A novel by Michael Ondaatjee which deals with the gradually revealed history of the eponymous seriously injured man who is being nursed in Italy at the end of World War II.

The novel won the Booker prize in 1993.

A The English Patient film directed by Anthony Minghella with Ranulph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche, Willem Dafoe and Kristin Scott Thomas was released in 1996 and won the Golden Globe for Best Picture - Drama and Academy Awards for:
