Marys Room is a philosophical thought experiment proposed by Frank Jackson in his article "What Mary didn't know" in 1986.

Imagine that from birth Mary is put to live in a room where no colors are shown. - Only black and white (not even the color of her skin is visible). - She lives in the room untill she is matured enough to be able to understand what colors are as mental processes in the brain, without ever having experienced colors.

The question now is the following: If set loose and she starts experiencing colors, will she have learned anything new?

This experiment that assumes some degree of functionalism, have led to disputes in the philosophy of mind.
