Sleeping Giant is a hill formation located in Hamden, Connecticut, specifically in the neighborhood of Mount Carmel. It is approximately ten miles north from downtown New Haven.
It is best known for anthropomorphically representing a slumbering man, and its profile features distinct "head", "chin", and "chest" sections. The hill is part of Sleeping Giant State Park, and features several hiking trails, a picnic area, camping facilities, and fishing opportunities for trout. There is a lookout tower located on the hill's crest, from which one can look out over large expanses of New Haven county. The peak of the tower stands approximately 750 feet above sea level.
Local Native American tribes considered the mountain to be the resting physical form of a destructive spirit. In their eschatology, it is presaged that Sleeping Giant will arise again one day to wreak destruction.
