Spoiler could refer to any of the following:

  • A document or review which discloses plot details of a book, play, or film. Since this often ruins the subjective experience of viewing said work, it is considered extremely improper to expose a person to such information without his or her consent. For this reason, reviews and discussions of media that disclose essential plot details should be given spoiler warnings. See: spoiler (media)
  • The following tag, which should be added to any Wikipedia article with the potential to be a spoiler according to the previous definition: Template:Spoiler. This is known as a spoiler tag.
  • In politics or gaming, an individual unable to win an election or game for him- or herself, but with the power to determine which player among two or more others does win. Also known as a kingmaker.
