Articles on caste
I've noticed that both Bhumihar and Indian caste system have been the target of either blanking vandals or vandals inserting nonsense. I don't know enough about either subject to clean them up (both are tagged), but I have been rv'ing to the non-blanked versions. Perhaps someone who knows the subject could have a look and make some edits, particularly to the first article. Cheers! -- Dave C.talk | Esperanza 07:00, 14 September 2005 (UTC)
- I personally don't have indepth knowledge, but if this continues let us know, and the page can be protected. User:Nichalp/sg 07:16, 14 September 2005 (UTC)
From the Bhumihar article, I deleted some of statements I knew to be false (Lord Laaloo Prasad Yadav and some of the other "spiritual leaders" and "deities" are actually Indian politicians, statements which were clearly added by a malicious vandal. And I added a disputed tag since I'm not sure as to the accuracy of the rest (comments to shortly go in Talk:Bhumihar

::These three persons donot belong to Bhumihar caste, they are Yadav. Bhumihars were never called Mleccha - calling Bhumihars as Mleccha is not fair. I being originally a native Bihar (before its bifurcation into Bihar and Jharkhand), I have several friends of different social groups, castes, and religions, including several ones belonging to Bhumihar caste, I am presented a brief clarification. Shortly, I will add more contents to the article. And, in an encyclopedic writing, "Sri" (equivalent to Mr. in English) is not required to be put before the name unless that is part of the full name. As such, in redlines in the article, "Sri" should be removed as may be required.

Adding an article to a category
- Please feel free to move this discussion to a more relevant place. This is a discussion initiated at Wikipedia talk:Category
If I were to add Winston Churchill to a category alpvcy, the usual procedure is to edit the page and add at the bottom [[[Category:alpvcy|Churchill, Winston]]] (ignore the extra set of brackets - included to make it visible) - the idea being last name followed by first name. I wanted to know if this is a standard practice. For South Indian names, editors unaware of the local custom assume either caste names such as Reddy or suffixes such as Rao to be last names and add categories accordingly, creating a huge nightmare in terms of categorisation. I request help on two counts - (1) Wikepedia standards, if any, on the naming issues and (2) How to ensure continuity, especially in South Indian names. (apart from having a warning visible in the edit mode, which can be tedious to insert in all articles). --Gurubrahma 06:50, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
- Indian Names! whew always a big problem. According to cricinfo, Muslims names are written as "Name-Surname" (Wasim Akram), Kapil Dev is written as it is, but the rest is surname-name. But I'm not the really the expert on SI names. :( User:Nichalp/sg 18:55, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
- Tamil people often do not have surnames and they also do not put their caste names prominently nowadays as it is considered indecent to do so. Some politicians who depend on caste-based voting and other bigshots who want to show their caste in public are exceptions to the above rule. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 03:56, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
Declaration of Independence
I didn't see an obvious place to put an India-related article request so I'll pop this here! The Salt Satyagraha refers to the Indian National Congress's Jan 30, 1930 Indian Declaration of Independence / Declaration of Independence of India, and this seems to be a noteworthy gap in the otherwise excellent collection of Indian history articles. I know nothing about the Declaration myself, and there seems to be a paucity of information on the 'net, so hopefully someone here can fill me and Wikipedia in. Thanks! Ziggurat 21:21, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
- Yup, this is the right place to ask. However this is the first time I've ever heard of such a declaration. A google search wasn't really helpful. Do you have any more information so we could go on/ cross-reference? User:Nichalp/sg 05:05, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
- The declaration of Independence is more popularly known as Purna Swaraj resolution and was proposed in the 1929 annual conference of Congress Party at Lahore by Jawaharlal Nehru. It declared that India would be free from 26 January, 1930. This was the reason why independent India adopted 26 January, 1950 as the Republic day (i.e. to honour the original proposed date of independence). If an article is to be created, Purna Swaraj would be a more appropriate title. It should also explain how and why the concept is different from Swaraj. --Gurubrahma 05:50, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
- Sweet, glad someone knows about it! I really don't have anything more to go on than the mention in the Salt Satyagraha article, and was just curious. If/when someone creates an article, it'd be great to add it to the list on Declaration of independence. Cheers, Ziggurat 09:51, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
Bollywood
Mairi suggested that I post here with a request for help at Bollywood. I've attracted the ire of a user who posts as Harprit (and also many other usernames and anonIPs) and he has been methodically reverting my edits. He wants to replace the consensus Bollywood article (achieved with much struggle over the last two years) with a version in which Urdu, as the source of vocabulary for many lyrics, is excised. There's not much of a community at Bollywood, and I've been trying to fend off Harprit by myself. I would appreciate it if some of you could take a look and see which version you prefer. If you have some fresh ideas or improving copyedits, that's fine too. Zora 06:20, 16 October 2005 (UTC)
- Well, for one, the talk:bollywood page should be archived so that we can figure out what's going on and make the discussion easier. Secondly, I couldn't quite fathom what Harpit is doing, so could you please elaborate. User:Nichalp/sg 07:20, 16 October 2005 (UTC)
- He has munged the first few paras of the article to remove any mention of the language controversy re Bollywood movies (are they Hindi AND Urdu, or just Hindi, or better described as Hindustani) because he's engaged in a fracas at Urdu, under various usernames and anonIPs. I've pissed him off enough that he's threatening me, vandalizing my userpage, and following me around to revert my edits. See User:Sukh/Revert War Evidence. It's not just the excision of Urdu -- his command of English is a bit shaky, and his text is neither grammatical nor encyclopedic. He's just been blocked for 24 hours due to breaking the 3-revert rule, but I'm not sure that this will stop him. He might switch to one of his other usernames or anonIPs. We'll see. Zora 09:29, 16 October 2005 (UTC)
- Sorry I couldn't respond earlier, Zora had begged around then finally had one of her friends block me for a while. Mostly what she claims is a bunch of lies, I hadn't vandalized anything i just stripped her of a barnstar because of her name-calling and childish behavior then somebody told me I wasn't allowed to do that. If you look at the difference between those two at Bollywood, her claims are silly. Just because I changed 'poetic Urdu words' to 'Urdu words', she says i remove the mention. She's had a vendetta, if you take a look at her contributions for the last couple of weeks, you can see that she has been going to pages that I could really care less about and Defaming my name "Harprit Attack!!". The worse thing about her is that when she's busy playing the role of WikiGod, whatever is against what she prefers she started pleading for help on talk pages. "please revert war him" "please hold my fort" and so on. I just hope she gets some sense----HaRpRiT
Malnad College of Engineering
Just thought I would let you know, I recently visited MCE and found it an article about Malnad College of Engineering. I moved the article to its full name, and cleaned it up a bit, but it needs more - I thought someone from INWNB might know more about the topic! -- Chuq 10:48, 16 October 2005 (UTC)
New categories
Nichalp created Category:Padma Bhushan awardees and I created the remaining two categories Category:Padma Vibhushan awardees and Category:Padma Shri awardees to complete the set; I have also populated 66, 41 and 102 articles with these categories respectively. Surprisingly, the last category could not be readily linked as most of the articles that would have fallen in the category did not talk of that award and I had to enter the award information as well before categorising. Since most of the notable Indians typically get a Government recognition also, these categories may be useful. They may also be helpful in determining if the subject of the article is notable or not. I have also created another category, Category:Actor-politicians. Right now, its population looks more broad-based and universal but I'm definite that it would get swamped with the Indian personalities not tagged yet in no time. --Gurubrahma 18:52, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
The article is very biased and aplogetic. Needs some work. --Dangerous-Boy 22:17, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

Peer review
I've been working on the Malwa article, and would like to request all editors to review the article. Seems like we can easily make it into a featured article. Any suggestions and/or contributions will be highly appreciated. deeptrivia 16:13, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
Important article missing
There is no article on Denotified tribes of India. It is a reasonably important subject. deeptrivia 07:03, 19 November 2005 (UTC)
