A diesel hydraulic class built for docks and restricted loading gauge. These locomotives had the door to the cab at the rear, with a railed veranda behind the cab. They were built by Yorkshire Engine Co.; 1960 (D2850-D2859)and 1961 D2860-D2869); numbered D2850-2869 of which 02001(D2851), 02003(D2853) and 02004(D2856) entered the BR TOPS system.

The engine was a Rolls-Royce C6MFL176 6-cyl.in-line connected to a Rolls-Royce series 10,000 3-stage twin-disc torque converter and a manually operated YEC reduction and reversing final drive gearbox. Power was 179 hp at 1800 rpm with a maximum tractive effort of 15,000 lb. and a maximum speed of 19.5 mph.
