Arrondissement

The city of Paris, France is divided into 20 arrondissements.

The arrangement is in the form of a clockwise spiral, starting with the 1st arrondissement in the middle of the city on the right bank (north bank).

The list below indicates right (R) or left (L) bank:

  • 2ème arrondissement R
  • 3ème arrondissement R
  • 4ème arrondissement R
  • 5ème arrondissement L
  • 6ème arrondissement L
  • 7ème arrondissement L
  • 8ème arrondissement R
  • 9ème arrondissement R
  • 10ème arrondissement R
  • 11ème arrondissement R
  • 12ème arrondissement R
  • 13ème arrondissement L
  • 14ème arrondissement L
  • 15ème arrondissement L
  • 16ème arrondissement R
  • 17ème arrondissement R
  • 18ème arrondissement R
  • 19ème arrondissement R
  • 20ème arrondissement R

On January 1, 1860 new territory was defined to be within the city, and the previous 12 arrondissements were rearranged with the new territory to become the present 20.

The cities Marseille and Lyon are also divided into arrondissements.

Arrondissement is also the name of the subdivisions of the French départements. The capital city of an arrondisement is the sous-préfecture.
