Born Wilhelm Hershel, William Herschel changed his name upon migration to England. He is most famous for discovering the planet Uranus in 1781. He made a number of important contributions to astronomy and was one of the leaders of the British scientific community in the late 18th century.

His son John Herschel also became a famous astronomer.
