Ani DiFranco is a progressive feminist singer, guitar player, and songwriter. Her music has been classified as folk rock and alternative rock, but she has quite recently started developing her reach across genres, having collaborated with hip-hop artists and Prince. She has recorded an album of Utah Phillips songs with him.

Born on September 23 1970, in Buffalo, New York, Ani started playing gigs at the age of nine; her career has gradually exploded since. She is a prolific writer, having produced three studio albums of new material and one remix album just in 1999 (see list below). Twelve studio albums have been released in her name.

At the age of eighteen Ani started Righteous Babe Records -- her own record company.
