RuneScape weapons
There is a large number of weaponry and armor available in the MMORPG RuneScape.
Ranged Weapons
Bows and Arrows
Bows are the most popular ranged weapons in RuneScape, and the only ones that can be used by nonmembers are the bow and arrows. Both of these can be fletched by members. Non-members can buy bows in the Archery Shops in Varrock and in Rimmington, and from other players. Arrows can also be purchased from the Archery Shops or received from monster drops.
The following are the types of bows (with ranged level requirements in parenthesis and italicized bows being members only):
- Long/short bow (level 1),
- Oak long/short bow (level 5),
- Willow long/short bow (level 20),
- Maple long/short bow (level 30),
- Yew long/short bow (level 40),
- Magic long/short bow (level 50; both with special attacks),
The Magic Longbow's special attack is Powershot. This attack uses the full power of the longbow so that the chances of hitting your opponent are greatly increased. The Magic Shortbow's special attack is Snapshot. This attack allows you to fire two rapid shots at your opponent, however the speed reduces your accuracy.
The arrows are identified by the metal their heads are made of. They do not have ranged level requirements, but the better arrows can only be used by the better bows (all arrows are non-members except rune arrows):
- Bronze arrows (can be used with any bow)
- Iron arrows (can be used with any bow)
- Steel arrows (must be used with oak bow or better)
- Mithril arrows (must be used with willow bow or better)
- Adamant arrows (must be used with maple bow or better)
- Rune arrows (must be used with yew bow or better)
Additionally, there are two special types of arrows: Fire Arrows, which can be made after completing the Underground Passage quest. These can be obtained by wrapping a damp cloth around an arrow and using it with a fire. There are also Ice Arrows, which are found & used only during the Temple of Ikov quest. You can obtain these by searching chests in the Temple of Ikov dungeon.
Ogre bows and Arrows
The Ogre Bow is an item specific to the Big Chompy Bird Hunting Quest and is members-only. It is used to kill Chompy Birds, a species native to the Feldip Hills, and is the only weapon other than the Ogre Composite Bow (see below) that can kill them. The bow is obtained from Rantz, the relatively friendly Ogre that introduces you to Chompy Bird Hunting. The only arrows that can be used with this bow are the appropriately named Ogre Arrows. These are made from chiseled Wolf bone tips, Achey tree shafts and feathers and can only be made by players. Ogre Bows and arrows can be used to kill monsters other than Chompy Birds, but they are extremely weak.
Composite Ogre Bow and Brutal Arrows
After completing the Zogre Flesh Eaters quest, members are able to fletch a Composite Ogre Bow. This bow can be used with normal Ogre Arrows or Brutal Arrows. Brutal arrows are made similarly to ogre arrows, except the tips are made from Bronze, Iron, Steel, Mithril, Adamantite or Rune nails. Brutal Arrows differ from normal or ogre arrows in that they use a crushing attack instead of a stabbing attack. Brutal arrows are also the only effective weapon against Zogres and Skogres, undead Ogres found in the Zogre Flesh Eaters quest.
Crystal Bow
The Crystal Bow can be obtained after completing the Roving Elves quest. The Crystal bow requires no arrows for ammunition, but rather is bought with 2500 magical charges and requires both level 70 Ranged and level 50 Agility to wield. When the charges are used up, the bow reverts to a seed that can be recharged from where you bought it (in Tirannwn) for a fee. The first bow you get (for free from Islwyn) has only 2/10 charge, which will only allow 500 shots before the next recharge, but every bow after that will have a capacity of 2500 shots. Every time you recharge the bow, the fee decreases, but it levels off after the fifth recharge. The first recharge costs 900000 coins; and the price will not drop below 180000 coins. The more shots that are fired, the less powerful the bow becomes. The bow is useful for training quickly, but it is expensive, and because of the cost of the bow, it is rarely used in the wilderness. However, with the recent introduction of the new mage spells, it may prove more useful. The first recharge costs 900,000gp (900k), the second charge is 720,000gp, the third one is 540,000, fourth charge is 360,000gp, and the last charge is 180,000. Also, if your bow is at 180,000 gp per charge, for example, the Crystal Shield's next recharge will be 150,000gp, so the cost of the bow and the shield (and soon the halberd) are all lowered, since Ilfeen gets better at enchanting seeds for you each time. If you want to buy another bow, they cost 900,000 gp no matter how low your recharges are. The new bow is bought from Islwyn. Islwyn also sells Crystal Shields for 720,000 gp. The best way to make use of the Crystal Bow is to buy another one immediately as soon as you finish Roving Elves. That way, when your first bow degrades after its limited 500 shots, you have another full 10/10 bow to use. You can make money to recharge the first bow while you use the new bow. As soon as you have enough to recharge, you recharge it fully, courtesy Ilfeen, and now your first bow is full. Now, you can use your first bow while you're making money to recharge the 2nd bow, so you never have two crystal seeds in your bank. Once you get the charges down to 180k, you don't have to be as sparing with the bows. You can spend all the charges on training and gain a few ranged levels quickly, and not have to spend much time making money for both, which is 180,000gp per bow. This adds up to 360,000 gp, and is no problem to make for most players.
Crossbows & Bolts
Crossbows tend to be rarely used, due to their comparatively low accuracy and rate-of-fire (e.g. in comparison to a standard bow). However, they can be advantageous in a small number of situations, for example, when fighting Dragons - as crossbows are single-handed (whereas bows are double-handed), the player can wield an Antifire shield (see below, under Shields), without which any player would be quickly defeated, due to the debilitating power of a Dragon's breath. There are only three types of crossbows:
- Crossbow: Plain, ordinary crossbow.
- Phoenix Crossbow: This crossbow is used in the Shield of Arrav quest; it has the same attack bonus, though some players claim that it is more powerful than the standard crossbow.
- Karil's Crossbow: One of the most powerful ranged weapons in RuneScape. It is part of a Barrows equipment set and requires bolt racks to work. It is also a two-handed weapon. This crossbow, when wielded, looks like a machine gun to some players.
Only normal bolts are available to non-members, but as ever, members can attach bolt tips to the bolts to make them more powerful. All bolts can be used at any Ranged level:
- Bolts
- Opal bolts: Opal bolt tips can be received from using a chisel on a cut opal; Opals are mined from gem rocks in Shilo Village, pickpocketed from ham members and dug up/panned from the digsite.
- Pearl bolts: Pearl Bolt tips can be received from using a chisel on pearls; Pearls can be caught while fishing with a big net.
- Barbed bolts: Barbed bolt tips can be bought from the ticket merchant in Hemenster's Ranging Guild.
- Bolt racks: Bolt racks can be bought from a man at the docks of Port Phasmatys or received from the Barrows. These will only function with Karil's Crossbow.
Seercull Bow
The Seercull Bow can be obtained by killing any of the Dagannoth Kings on Waterbirth Island. It's special attack is Soulshot. This attack reduces your opponent's Magic level by the amount of damage you inflict. For example, if you deal 15 damage to your opponent, his Magic level will decrease by 15 levels temporarily. This bow is highly prized and can be sold for a hefty price.
One-Handed Range Weapons
One-handed ranged weapons are basically the "miscellaneous" weapons. They are all members only (with the exception of the Crossbow and Phoenix Crossbow) and, obviously, one-handed so that a shield or Prayer book can also be wielded:
Throwing knives
Throwing knives can be made of Bronze, Iron, Steel, Black (only dropped by Shadow Warriors and Imperial Guard), Mithril, Adamant, and Rune. These weapons, except for the Black ones of course, can also be smithed by players (5 per bar). They can be tipped with poison to increase lethality and are stackable items.
Darts
Darts can be made (by players who have at least partially completed the Tourist Trap quest) of Bronze, Iron, Steel, Mithril, Adamantite, and Rune. These weapons can be smithed by players (10 tips per bar smithed; attach feathers). Like throwing knives, they can be poisoned and are stackable items.
Javelins
Javelins are made out of Bronze, Iron, Steel, Black, Mithril, Adamant, and Rune. Javelins can be found as drops from defeated monsters and can also be purchased inside the Ranging Guild. Javelins are notoriously slow and are generally considered to be the most unpopular out of the one-handed Ranging weapons. These are stackable items.
Throwing axes
Throwing Axes can be made of Bronze, Iron, Steel, Black, Mithril, Adamant, and Rune. They can be bought from a shop in the Ranging Guild. They cannot be manufactured by other players and do not drop from any known monsters. These are stackable items. The Rune Throwing Axe has a special attack (Chain Hit) that, when activated in a multicombat zone with multiple enemies nearby, will bounce from enemy to enemy up to 5 times (much like a "Chain Lightning effect").
Toktz-Xil-Ul
The Toktz-Xil-Ul is a members-only weapon that looks like a type of "throwing ring". They are obtained from the weapons shop inside the TzHaar city for 375 TokKul each. The Toktz-Xil-Ul have attack settings similar to Throwing Knives and appear to be the most powerful of the 1-handed Ranging weapons in the entire game. They do not have a special attack and cannot be poisoned. These are stackable items.
Dwarf Multicannon
The Dwarf Cannon is by far the most unusual weapon in RuneScape. To use it, you must have completed the Dwarf Cannon quest. The Cannon consists of four parts (Base, Stand, Barrel, Furnace) and uses cannonballs as ammo, and may hit up to 30. The complete Cannon can be bought from the dwarves after the quest. A cannonball mold can be bought at the entrance to the Dwarven Mine and is used to make cannonballs. Cannonballs are made from steel bars and each bar makes 4 balls. A lot of players feel that Jagex should allow them to manufacture cannonballs from the higher level metals, as there are Mithril, Adamantite and Rune cannonballs encountered during one of the newer quests.
To use the Cannon, a player must set up all four pieces on the floor and load it with 30 cannonballs. The cannon will rotate, attacking all monsters in range. This feature is very useful in multi-combat areas. When in single combat areas, the cannon will fire at the monster attacking the player who set up the cannon, but only if the monster is in the Cannon's firing path. In some positions the cannon cannot fire because of the angle, or often because there is something obstructing its path. If the player is not in combat as the cannon fires, the Cannon will fire as if it was in multi combat. The player must frequently refill the Cannon with cannonballs since it fires so quickly. This can sometimes be annoying and seem expensive (as cannonballs cost a good amount if not smithed yourself) but it is known as the quickest way to gain Ranged experience. Many players consider the Multi-Cannon to be a powerful weapon that requires a lot of time and/or money to maintain.
If the Cannon is left to be continuously firing (i.e. keep reloading it before it runs out of ammo) over time it will begin to wear down and eventually will "decay". The player will receive a warning message that this is about to happen; apparently by picking it up and setting it back down again they can get around this. Should your Cannon decay, you can return to the Dwarf you purchased it from to obtain a free replacement.
The Cannon also takes up a lot of room and often requires a big empty spot to set up at. It cannot be set up in certain places, such as both the Slayer Cave and Castle, and in other areas such as the bar in Canifis, and anywhere within the TzHaar city.
If the cannon is used against the Kalphite queen, she will destroy it. If deployed against the King Black Dragon, he will also destroy it with a fireball.
Melee Weapons & Armor
Melee Weapons are used in close range (in most cases, point blank) combat, the most commonly used of all combat techniques in Runescape. How effectively a melee weapon is wielded is governed by their attack and strength levels, as well as attack speed. The following are not all of the melee weapons (as many unrelated objects, such as a rubber chickens, can be used as weapons) but these are the weapons designed specifically for melee combat, and therefore the most commonly used. Some weapons, such as Dragon-class weapons, Granite Mauls and Abyssal Whips have special attacks that allow a user to perform such effects as hitting twice in one turn or stunning an opponent.
DEFENCE
Shields
There are two main types of shields in RuneScape: the Square Shield, which is shaped like a square, and a Kiteshield, which is shaped like a kite. The Kiteshield is stronger than the square shield and requires the same Defense skill level to wield. An important but often-overlooked distinction is that the Kite Shield is better at protection from stabbing attacks, while the Square Shield is better for slashing protection. Also, Kiteshields are usually only a few defensive points below the same as the next level of Square Shield. For example, a Bronze Kiteshield has very similar properties to the Iron Square Shield. There are also some special shields in RuneScape. These include the Granite Shield, Crystal Shield, Antifire Shield, and Dragon Square Shield.
Crystal Shield
The Crystal Shield is one of two items you can ask for when you complete the Roving Elves quest. It is arguably the best anti-range shield in RuneScape. It is superior to every other shield in range at all decay states except the Granite Shield. Even then, that's at 2/10. For melee defense, it's average. Magic-using players could consider this to balance their weakness against Rangers in the Wilderness. The Crystal Shield also lasts a long time in non-PvP combat. Since many of the monsters that players train their melee skills on usually hit zero (and not count against decaying the shield), the shield helps this out even further.
The Crystal Shield degrades (i.e. gets a "-1/10" applied to it) with every 250 times you sustain damage. When the shield is reduced to 0/10, it "reverts" back to its seed form, where you must bring it to the NPC elf Ilfeen to recharge. Recharge costs are:
- 1st Charge: 750000gp
- 2nd Charge: 600000gp
- 3rd Charge: 450000gp
- 4th Charge: 300000gp
- 5th Charge: 150000gp (price does not change from the 5th charge on)
Alternatively, you can ask Islwyn to buy another completely new shield or bow for the maximum prices if you lose you shield/bow or crystal seed.
Granite Shield
The Granite Shield is a monster drop from the level 113 Troll Generals, found in the Troll Stronghold and encountered during the quest by the same name. These shields are fairly uncommon and are very heavy; they have a minimal defense against Magic attacks and are fairly adept at fending off most types of melee attacks. They are seldom used in the Wilderness or other Player vs Player areas, however.
Antifire Shield
By embarking on the freeplay Dragon Slayer quest, players can obtain the Antifire Shield from the Duke of Lumbridge free of charge. This shield protects players from the rather nasty effects of a Dragon's firebreath attack. However, the shield does not render a player completely impervious to the attack, the damage is only significantly reduced.(In the case of the King Black Dragon, his freeze/shock/poison attacks are somewhat mitigated by this shield as well). Combined with an Antifire Potion, this shield renders all fire-breathing attacks to be completely harmless against the wearer. The shield does not detract from the player's Magic Attack or Ranging rating, so it is favoured by Mages who like to go into the Wilderness. Should the Antifire Shield be lost, simply return to the Duke and he will replace it for free, or you can buy a replacement from other players if they are willing to sell. When not equipped while fighting dragons, the firebreath will inflict an enormous amount of damage.
Dragon Square Shield
The much-vaunted Dragon Square Shield is actually in two halves: The Shield Left Half is an extremely rare drop from certain monsters in the game. Should one actually manage to secure one of these, they will require 750000 coins to purchase the Shield Right Half from the shop atop the Legends Guild (which, of course, requires that you have completed the Legends Quest in order to enter). Once both halves are in a player's possession, he/she then proceeds to an anvil with hammer in hand to join the halves together - level 60 Smithing required. The Dragon Square Shield is considered to be a status symbol in RuneScape; it is consistantly the most powerful melee shield in the game, other than the Crystal Shield, which is only the most powerful when fully charged. This shield was once the rarest item in the game, but after a period of time, many players managed to get the left half and it decresed in rarity.
Armour
There are 11 main types of armour, these are Bronze, Iron, Steel, Black, Mithril, Adamantite, Initate (monk), Rune, Dragon (members only), Crystal (members only) and Barrows (members only); Bronze being the weakest and Barrows the strongest. Members also have access to Chaos, Cooking or Crafting gauntlets (obtained from the Family Crest quest), which, in addition to their unique abilities, raise defence and attack.
Wizard's Robes
There is a wizard's hat and robe, which offer a small magic bonus, and are the only non-members magic armour. There are also black and blue skirts to complete the set, but it does not offer any magic bonus. Members have access to Mystic Robes (which give a large magic offensive bonus but no notable defense bonuses), Splitbark Armor (which gives a smaller magic attack bonus than Mystic Robes, but have much better defensive bonuses), and Skeletal Armor (which has attributes similar to Splitbark Armor).
OFFENSE
Abyssal whip
The Abyssal Whip is currently known to be the most effective, most accurate and second (only to the recent Dragon Hatchet) most expensive single-handed melee weapon in RuneScape. It requires an Attack level of 70 to wield. It is a rare monster drop from the Abyssal Demon that takes a Slayer level of 85 to kill. Though the whip is generally accepted as the most effective implement of melee training in RuneScape, it lacks the ability to directly train the Strength skill. The Abyssal Whip's special attack is (Energy Drain). This attack is more accurate and, if successful, will transfer 10% of your opponent's run energy to you. However, this can only be used against other players (for example, in the Wilderness, Castle Wars, Duel Arena or the TzHaar Fight Pit). Many believe it to possess the highest attack bonuses of all weapons, although both the Dragon Halberd and Dharok's Great Axe possess higher Attack and Strength bonuses than the Abyssal Whip. Regardless, the speed of halberds and Dharok's Great Axe still cause less total damage per minute. The Abyssal Whip is undoubtedly a much more effective melee weapon due to its superior speed and the fact that it is wielded single-handed, allowing the use of a shield or a Prayer book.
The Abyssal Whip uses a "Slash" attack, and can be used to slash webs open.
Daggers
Daggers are the cheapest and second swiftest melee weapons in RuneScape, next to claws. Daggers come in Bronze, Iron, Steel, Black, Mithril, Adamantite, Rune, and Dragon (members-only). Members can poison their daggers. Poisoned daggars can hit 4s and 6s. The poison will only wear off once you drink an antipoison potion. Dragon daggers can be bought in Zanaris (a diamond offering is required to enter the area) after completing the Lost City quest. Daggers are often used as a backup weapon for rangers and mages in the Wilderness. The special attack of the Dragon Dagger is the ability to hit twice in quick succession. This attack is called Puncture. It consists of two quick strikes at your opponent, with slightly increased accuracy and damage.
Note that the dagger uses Stab as its main combat function; when the special attack (Dragon Dagger only) is used the dagger uses Slash.
Swords and Scimitars
Swords and Scimitars are both slashing weapons that hit fairly fast and slash well. Swords and scimitars are fairly well balanced weapons, but they trade off against each other in their overall damage - the sword being the weakest and the scimitar being the stronger. Longswords are slower than Scimitars and Swords, and the Rune & Dragon versions of them are more powerful than their scimitar counterparts, while Longswords made out of weaker metals are less powerful than their equivalents.
Both swords & scimitars are available in Bronze, Iron, Steel, Black (only members can obtain this by using the Theiving skill), Mithril, Adamantite, Rune, and, to a limited degree, Dragon (note that only the Dragon Longsword and Dragon Scimitar exist, and both are quest rewards). Dragon Long Swords can be obtained in Zanaris after completing the Lost City quest and, until recently, were the most widely used melee weapon in the wilderness. The special attack of the Dragon Longsword is called Cleave. This attack is more powerful and so inflicts increased damage to your opponent. During the Spring of 2005, Jagex released the long-awaited Dragon Scimitar and it can now be obtained on Ape Atoll only after completing the Monkey Madness Quest. Almost immediately after its release, the Dragon Scimitar became the melee weapon of choice aside from the Abyssal Whip in the wilderness. This is in part due to the Dragon Scimitar's special attack (Sever). This attack is more accurate and, if successful, will prevent your opponent from using protection prayers for 5 seconds.
There is also a quest sword, Excalibur, that can be obtained by completing the Merlin's Crystal quest. Its special attack is Sanctuary, with effects akin to that of drinking a regular defence potion (See Herblore). When the special attack is used, the player will say, "For Camelot!!" The movement made while activating the special attack is uncannily similar to the Makashi salute from Star Wars.
Maces
The Mace is similar to the Longsword, but it uses a Crush-style attack and is slightly less accurate. However, these weapons are slightly unique in that they have a high prayer bonus so that your prayer will last longer. The Mace is available in Bronze, Iron, Steel, Mithril, Adamantite, Rune, and Dragon. The Dragon Mace can be obtained in the Hero's guild(members only) after completing the Hero's quest. Though a relatively inaccurate weapon, the Dragon Mace's special attack (Shatter), is much more powerful, but it also has a reduced chance to hit. Nevertheless, veterans have a tendency to view the Mace with disdain, considering the Dragon Mace to be a limited-use auxillary weapon at best for when training against monsters with Prayer is required.
Battleaxes and Warhammers
The warhammer tends not to be particularly popular amongst RuneScape players, however, the battleaxe is fairly popular. The Battleaxe is sometimes used in the wilderness on the free-to-play worlds because it has a combination of Crush & Slash attacks, but the seldom instances where a Crush attack is useful do not compensate for its low accuracy . Comparably, the Warhammer exhibits the same attack statistics as a Battleaxe, but can only be used with a Crush attack, therefore making it even less popular.
These two weapons are available in Bronze, Iron, Steel, Black , Mithril, Adamantite, Rune, and the Battle Axe is available in Dragon. The Dragon Battleaxe can be obtained in the Hero's guild after completing the Hero's quest. The Dragon Battleaxe's special attack (Rampage) will lower your attack, ranged, defence, and magic stats while boosting your strength stat. When used in conjunction with a Stat Restore Potion, the special attack is similar to drinking a Super Strength Potion. When used, the player will yell out "Raarrrrrgggggghhhhhhh!!" Nevertheless, the Dragon Battleaxe is considered to be an obsolete weapon by most veteran players.
Two-Handed Weapons
The Two-handed Sword is the slowest yet most powerful weapons in the basic melee (smithable) weapon line. Unfortunately, this is where its advantage end. Since two hands are needed to wield these weapons, shields or prayer books cannot be equipped simultaneously. Although it used to be the weapon of choice in the wilderness in RuneScape Classic, it has since become obsolete. Two-handed Swords are available in Bronze, Iron, Steel, Black (monster drop only), Mithril, Adamantite, and Rune. Curiously, there is no Dragon Two-handed Sword yet in existence, although the weapon used by the Fire Giants closely resembles what one might look like.
Claws
Claws are a members-only item and can be smithed after completing the Death Plateau Quest. These weapons are available in Bronze, Iron, Steel, Black (monster drop only), Mithril, Adamantite, and Rune. Claws are comparable to Daggers in attack, accuracy and speed, and provide a reasonably decent Defense bonus, but have a few drawbacks. As they are two-handed, a shield or prayer book cannot be equipped at the same time. They are also more expensive, as the higher quality versions require a higher level to smith (level 98 smithing to make the Rune Claws). These disadvantages don't make them a very popular weapon. Rune claws are the only claws that have a special attack (Impale) which is more powerful and more accurate, though it is slower than normal. Some players carry Rune Claws with them when they go into the Wilderness to perform miscellaneous tasks, such as mining.
Spears
Spears are a members-only item and are obtained from either monster drops, or by completing the Tai Bwo Wannai Trio quest and purchasing them from the shop. They hit at the same speed as a Longsword. Spears can be poisoned with normal weapon poison, a Karambwan Poison, which is more potent and can only be used on spears, and with Extra Weapon Poison and Super Weapon Poison (see Herblore for more information on making these 2 poisons). Spears are available in Bronze, Iron, Steel, Black (monster drop only), Mithril, Adamantite, Rune, and Dragon. Although they can only be used to train controlled and defensive attacks, spears are still arguably the most flexible weapons in the game, as they use Stab, Crush, Slash, and Controlled attacks modes. However, spears are rarely used to train or in the Wilderness. The Dragon Spear, which resembles a trident more than a spear, is the most expensive Dragon weapon, as it can only be obtained from monster drops and requires no quest completion to wield it. The special for the Dragon Spear (Shove) deals no damage to your opponent. It simply forces them back away from you and stuns them for a short time. Interestingly, the Bronze Spear is used to construct a Scarecrow for use in the Farming skill when growing Sweetcorn crops but they sux.
Halberds
Halberds are members-only. After completing the notoriously long Regicide quest, members are able to purchase Bronze, Iron, Steel, black, Mithril, Adamantite, Rune and Dragon Halberds from the Quartermaster's shop in Tyras' Camp. The basic halberds can be resold to people who have not completed the quest, but the quest must be completed to wield the Dragon Halberd. Halberds are very slow, but have a major advantage over other melee weapons in that they can attack an opponent two squares away including diagonal (where any other melee weapon can only reach any adjacent squares except diagonal ones) and even through and over obstacles such as fences & tables so the opponent cannot retaliate. The Dragon Halberd's special attack (Sweep) is a devastating slash through your opponent. For large monsters (takeing up more than one unit square), the halberd will automatically sweep back and forth once to do extra damage. If there are three small monsters side by side, the special attack will hit them all once. The slow and inaccurate attack of the Halberd leads to slower training, but not having to use food and being able to attack monsters that would normally be impossible is a definite advantage. The weapon is not used often in the wilderness as it is expensive , and its single advantage is useless as opponents just move away from you if you attack them through or over an obstacle.
Granite Maul
The Granite Maul (members only) is an enormous two-handed hammer, of average strength, and requires level 50 attack to wield. It used to be a notorious tool in the in the wilderness, as it could easily kill an opponent in 3 or 4 hits. However, Jagex lowered the accuracy of this weapon after much complaining from would-be Wilderness-dwelling players; thus it is no longer worthwhile to use. It is a semi-rare monster drop from the Gargoyle (members only) that takes a Slayer level of 75 to defeat. The Granite Maul, along with the Abyssal Whip, Excalibur, Darklight, Rune Throwing Axe, and Rune Claws (all being members only items), is one of the only non-Dragon melee weapons to have a special attack. The Maul's special attack (Quick Smash) is simply an extra attack taken instantly with no other effects.
The Maul is a two-handed weapon which uses the "Crush" style attack exclusively.
Barrows Weapons
All Barrows weapons and armour last 15 hours of solid combat before they must be 'repaired' at a fee (for each piece) when the weapon has become totally degraded. If you choose to repair the weapon before it becomes fully degraded, the cost will be lessened depending on how damaged it was to start with. The armour/weapon sets are very expensive, but provide the highest stats for defense and attack with the exception of Karil and Ahrim, being even better than dragon armour. Although they have no 'normal' special attack, each set possesses its own passive special attack which is activated randomly when the full set of armour is worn. Note that for this effect to have a chance of occurring, you must hit your opponent.
Here is a breakdown of each set's special attack and effects:
- Ahrim's special: Will lower your opponent's strength when a damaging spell hits them.
- Dharok's special: The lower your hitpoints fall, the higher you hit. Some players take advantage of this special by allowing themselves to get to low health and then putting on Protection prayers which allow them immunity from all NPCs. This is undoubtably the fastest yet most expensive & dangerous way to train melee combat.
- Guthan's special: Will occasionally leech your opponent's hitpoints and add the same amount to your own (If you hit an 11 on an enemy, you will heal 11 hitpoints). Very useful when training on monsters that occasionally hit you a decent amount of damage.
- Torag's special: Will drain your opponent's energy at 20% a drain. However, it will not add it to your own energy. This will, after a few hits, render your opponent incapable of running. This is useful in the Wilderness (But risky: Barrows sets cost an estimated 5 million coins), and the Duel Arena against rangers.
- Karil's special: Will drain your opponent's Agility level. This special ability has little to no use and has resulted in Karil armour being the cheapest. The effect can sometimes be used to kill players training their agility at the Wilderness Agility Course by trapping them between obstacles.
- Verac's special: Your attacks will have a chance to ignore your opponent's defence bonuses provided by their armor, defence level or activated prayers. This special ability is popular for Kalphite Queen trips and the Duel Arena.
Barrows armor & weaponry can be repaired by Bob at his Axe Shop in Lumbridge, Dunstan in Burthrope, and Tindel in Port Khazard.
Mage Weapons
Mages use staffs and runes of varying effects. Runes are small stones endowed with magical energy. Runes are used to cast a wide range of spells. Each casting of a spell uses up a certain number of runes, and different spells use different types of runes.
Runes

In the online game RuneScape, runes are the magical stones used for spells. The different kinds are:

There are also combination runes. These can be made using the Runecrafting skill.

Staffs
Magic staffs add to the player's "magic attack rating" for combat spells, and in general cause the player's spells to be more effective. They also allow the repetitive casting of attack spells in combat without requiring the player to click the spell and then the target for each individual casting. An Elemental staff is a staff that supplies an infinite amount of runes of the staff's type when wielded. It is not effective if only being carried in the pack. The types of elemental staffs are:
- Air Staffs/Battle Staffs/Mystic Staffs (unlimited Air runes)
- Water Staffs/Battle Staffs/Mystic Staffs (unlimited Water runes)
- Earth Staffs/Battle Staffs/Mystic Staffs (unlimited Earth runes)
- Fire Staffs/Battle Staffs/Mystic Staffs (unlimited Fire runes)
- Lava Battle Staffs/Mystic Staffs (unlimited Fire & Earth Runes)
- Mud Battle Staffs/Mystic Staffs (unlimited Earth & Water runes)
Battle Staffs can be made by players using the Crafting skill. Players may also further enhance the capabilities of their staffs by bringing them to Thormac the Sorcerer, found in the Scorpion Catcher quest. He will charge 40000 coins per staff. The Battle Staff will turn into a Mystic Staff, which has similar melee attack stats as a Rune LongSword.
Ancient Staff & Ancient Magicks
The Ancient Staff is a staff you can buy for 80,000 coins after completing the Desert Treasure quest. This staff allows players to automatically cast the new ancient magics. If the staff is lost it cannot be repurchased in this manner; it must be reobtained as a semi-rare drop from the Mummies within the Pyramid itself. The new spells actually consist of an entirely new Book of Spells that a player can switch out with the normal Book of Spells by praying at an altar in a pyramid located south of the Shantay Pass (Important Note: praying at this altar reduces your Prayer points to 0!). These spells are highly destructive, all having an auxillary effect, and add more lethality to the magic class of RuneScape.
The new spell book include four types of combat spells:
- Smoke spells: Poisons the enemy.
- Shadow spells: Lowers the enemy's attack temporarily.
- Blood spells: Heals your hits by 1/6th of the damage dealt to the enemy.
- Ice spells: Holds the enemy for 5-20 seconds (depending on the level of the spell).
Each type of spell comes with four different levels: Rush (the weakest), Burst, Blitz, and Barrage (the strongest). The Rush and Blitz spells attack one enemy at a time, while the Burst and Barrage spells can attack multiple targets as long as they and the attacker are in a multi-combat zone and the targets are adjacent to the central target of the spell. The major downfall of the spells is that they all have a huge rune consumption, and that while using them, one cannot use the normal offensive spells such as Entangle or Teleblock. The staff itself has stats similar to the mystic staffs, but provides a better magic Attack and Defence bonus
In addition, the Ancient Magicks have eight teleportation spells, outlined as follows:
- Paddewa Teleport: Teleports you to the ladder leading out of the Edgeville Dungeon.
- Senntisten Teleport: Teleports you west of the Digsite building.
- Kharyrll Teleport: Teleports you to the tavern in Canifis.
- Lassar Teleport: Teleports you to the top of Ice Mountain.
- Dareeyak Teleport: Teleports you to the Rat-Infested Ruins (level 22 Wilderness).
- Carrallanger Teleport: Teleports you to the Graveyard of Shadows (level 19 Wilderness).
- Annakarl Teleport: Teleports you to the Demonic Ruins (level 47 Wilderness).
- Ghorrock Teleport: Teleports you east of the Ice Plateau (level 44 Wilderness).
None of these teleports function beyond level 20 Wilderness (as usual), and a player suffering from the effects of the Teleblock spell will not be able to cast these spells.
Miscellaneous Items
Amulets
Enchanted amulets provide an increase in one or more combat statistics.
- Accuracy: a small increase in accuracy for all combat styles, this amulet is a reward for the Imp Catcher quest.
- Ghostspeak: obtained from Father Urhney in the Lumbridge Swamp during the freeplay Restless Ghost quest, this amulet allows you to speak with the dead. It recurs in a few member quests, such as Ghosts Ahoy and the Ghost Robe mini-game. If you've lost it, you can simply return to Urhney for a free replacement.
- Magic (Sapphire): a powerful amulet of magical attack, a must for the Mage
- Defence (Emerald): adding to defence is useful if you are getting hit
- Strength (Ruby): helps the melee fighter to hit harder
- Nature (Emerald): a members-only amulet that helps keep track of farming patches; it alerts the wearer when the patch has become diseased, died, or fully grown. The Amulet of Nature can only be bound to a single patch at any one time and you cannot own more than 1 at a time. This amulet is different to all others as, instead of being strung with string, its is strung with a Magic String. This is made by spinning the roots of a grown Magic Tree on a spinning wheel. Only obtainable by using the Farming Skill.
- Power (Diamond): moderately increases all combat stats, and is the most powerful freeplay amulet.
- Glory (Dragonstone): a members-only amulet of extreme power, stronger in attack, but weaker in defence than the amulet of power. It also has the ability to teleport the user to various locations up to four times. When it has run out of charges, it must be recharged at the Fountain of Heroes in the basement of the Heroes' Guild. Finally, the Amulet of Glory will increase the chances of finding gems when mining provided that it is charged and being worn.
- Fury (Onyx) - this is superior to the Amulet of Glory in that it boosts the defensive combat stats significantly higher. The Amulet of Fury is crafted from a cut Onyx gem, which is only obtainable from the ore shop in TzHaar.
The Mage is well served by the Sapphire Amulet of Magic, though many also consider the Emerald Amulet of Defence or Diamond Amulet of Power if facing any retaliation.
The Ranger would do well to choose the Emerald Amulet of Defence, Diamond Amulet of Power, or hang on to the Amulet of Accuracy.
The Melee fighter may find that the Ruby Amulet of Strength is their best choice, though the Diamond Amulet of Power is also good. The DragonStone Amulet of Glory is also a good choice for members, as although it is outclassed in individual stats by some of the other amulets, it has additional bonuses, and the highest total stat-boost, with the exception of the recently introduced Amulet of Fury.
Necklaces
The following Necklaces can be considered 'Amulets', as they are essentially the same thing:
- Games Necklace (Sapphire) - this necklace has 8 charges, much like the Ring of Duelling. When activated, it teleports you to the Games Room minigame undernearth the Burthorpe Castle. When it runs out of charges, the necklace disintegrates. It cannot be used beyond level 20 Wilderness.
- Necklace of Binding (Emerald) - when worn, it allows you to have a 100% yield when crafting Combination Runes. Without it, you risk losing some of the runes made. The Necklace disintegrates after an indefinite number of Combination Runes have been crafted.
Rings
Enchanted rings are wearable items which aid the wearer in combat or with other skills.
- Ring of Recoil (Sapphire): If your opponent damages you in combat, it automatically hits 10% of the damage they did back on them. After "recoiling" 40 damage, it shatters. Fractional damage adds up.
- Ring of Duelling (Emerald): when forged, can teleport the user to the Al-Kharid Duel Arena or the Castle Wars arena. After eight teleports, it crumbles to dust. Note that this ring will not function beyond level 20 Wilderness!
- Ring of Forging (Ruby): when worn, the user will be able to forge iron ore into iron bars with a 100% success rate. After 140 bars have been forged, it melts.
- Ring of Life (Diamond): If the wearer is reduced to less than 10% of his/her total hits in a single blow, WITHOUT being killed, it automatically teleports them to the town of Lumbridge (or Falador, if they have completed the "Recruitment Drive" quest and have selected that city as their spawn point). It is one-use and disintegrates after the teleport. Note that this ring will not function beyond level 30 Wilderness!
- Ring of Wealth (Dragonstone): a members-only ring that slightly improves the chances of receiving rare monster drops.
- Ring of Charos (Quest Reward): this ring is obtained after completing the Creature of Fenkenstrain quest. It allows entry to the Werewolf Agility course in eastern Canifis. Also, the ring can be "unlocked" during the Garden of Tranquility quest by bringing it to the Wise Old Man in Draynor. The unlocked ring (i.e. Ring of Charos(u)) allows you to sail to and from the island of Karamja for free,as well as allowing you to complete the Garden of Tranquility quest.
- Ring of Stone (Onyx): allows the wearer to turn into an immobile chunk of stone. While in this form the player cannot do anything except chat locally. If he or she tries to move, or is attacked, they automatically unmorph. The Ring appears to be merely a toy, but an expensive one. Rings of Stone are craftable as of October 4, 2005 with the release of the Fight Caves minigame expansion.
