The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks sit in the middle of Salmon Bay, part of Seattle's Lake Washington Ship Canal. They serve to keep the salt water of Puget Sound from mixing with the fresh water of Lakes Washington and Union, as well as to maintain the lakes' water level 20.6 feet above Puget Sound's mean lower low tide.
