Jackson County is a county located in the State of Wisconsin. As of 2000, the population is 19,100.

Geography

The county has a total area of 2,590 km2 (1,000 mi2). 2,557 km2 (987 mi2) of it is land and 33 km2 (13 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 1.28% water.

Demographics

As of 2000, there are 19,100 people, 7,070 households, and 483,588 families residing in the county. The population density is 7/km2 (19/mi2). There are 8,029 housing units at an average density of 3 persons/km2 (8 persons/mi2). The racial makeup of the county is 89.58% White, 2.27% African American, 6.16% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.01% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 1.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,070 households out of which 31.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.40% are married couples living together, 8.60% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 31.60% are non-families. 26.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.10% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 29.40% from 25 to 44, 22.80% from 45 to 64, and 14.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 114.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 116.30 males.
