Kate Moss (born January 16, 1974), is an English model who was once the "Face of Calvin Klein." She was born in Addiscombe, London Borough of Croydon, England.

Moss was discovered at the age of 14 by Sarah Doukas (the founder of Storm Model Agency) in 1988, at JFK Airport in New York City. Moss then went on to become the anti-supermodel of the 90's. She ushered in the waif look (while prompting much speculation over her weight) with a highly publicized campaign for Calvin Klein, particularly for posing nude in ads for its perfume brand, Obsession. Storm Model Agency lists Moss as being 5'8" but it is widely known that she is shorter than that, about 5'6"-5'7". Twiggy, a famous model during the 1960s who is 5'4" even wrote in her autobiography that she and Moss are about the same height. Despite this apparent disadvantage, Moss charmed the fashion industry and has walked/campaigned for such elite houses as Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, Versace, Chanel, Missoni, and David Yurman. Now in her 30s, Moss has still been working and has become a "supermodel" in her own right. In September 2005, after she was filmed while allegedly cutting and inhaling cocaine, many of her sponsors disapparated.

Notable Involvements

Moss has a long history of involvement in art and music, especially rock bands. She has appeared in a music video of the White Stripes and has sang tracks with Bobbie Gillespie/Primal Scream and Babyshambles. She has worked with various artists and sculptors including artist and photographer Chuck Close.

In February 2005, a nude portrait by Lucian Freud of Kate Moss while pregnant was sold for £3.93 million. Moss planned and posed for the portrait with Lila as her version of the Madonna - a full frontal nude.

April 2005 saw the launch of the spectacular Rimmel London Mascara Ad featuring a leather clad Kate Moss riding a motorbike through London, to the sound of the underground rock track 'Another Cold Beer' by Steven Crayn.

Moss has had campaigns with major Italian, French, New York, and British designers including Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Burberry, Rimmel, Missoni, David Yurman, and Calvin Klein. She just finished a shoot for Bulgari on November 22, 2005.

She has been featured in fashion spreads in most major fashion magazines including UK, US, and French Vogues (as well as other international Vogues), Another Man, the Face, and W. Moss has been on the cover of 17 issues of W, including one issue with nine different covers featuring the model. W even names Moss its "muse" (September 2003 issue). She has worked with the most well-known photographers in the fashion industry today, such as Mario Testino, Mario Sorrenti, Steven Klein, and Juergen Teller, and is a Peter L "trained" model.

In 1997, "Kate: The Kate Moss Book" was published. The book is a compilation of photos Moss herself had selected to represent her career in front of the camera.

Accolades & Awards

After more than a decade in the modelling business, Moss was cited by Forbes magazine as one of the most influential and rich celebrities worldwide. She continues to be featured on the covers of magazines like Vogue and W.

In July 2005, Moss won the prestigious Vogue/CFDA award from the Fashion Designers of America as the model who had progressed to icon status.

Significant Others

Opting not to settle down, Moss has had a series of relationships, often with people in the public eye, including photographer and now close friend, Mario Sorrenti, and American actor Johnny Depp.

On September 29, 2002, Moss gave birth to her daughter Lila Grace with her then-partner Jefferson Hack at the St. John and Elizabeth Hospital in West London.

In early 2005, Moss began dating former Libertines' frontman Pete Doherty, now of the band Babyshambles. It is rumored that she broke up with him and banned him from visiting her after entering rehab at the Meadows rehab center in Wickenburg, Arizona in September 2005 for being caught using cocaine.

The British tabloids and paparazzi often target Kate Moss. UK tabloid, the Sunday Mirror, was sued successfully by Moss earlier this year for claiming that she had slipped into a coma after taking large amounts of cocaine in Spain four years ago. It was also alleged by the media in September 2005 that Moss has had a long-standing lesbian affair with best friend Sadie Frost. Further allegations have been made that she has had sex with both Sadie and Sadie's then husband Jude Law several times, and that she has also been involved in lesbian threesomes with Sadie Frost and British TV star Davinia Taylor. Moss has been accused of almost everything from heroin to anorexia. British tabloids, particularly the Daily Mirror has long alleged that Moss habitually uses cocaine. In interviews, Moss has denied these claims and dismissed them as ridiculous.

On September 15, 2005, however, the Daily Mirror ran front page and interior photos of Moss allegedly snorting several lines of cocaine at a Babyshambles recording session.

Moss previously checked herself into rehab in 1998, claiming she was suffering from "exhaustion." She later admitted she'd been drinking and getting high before getting on the catwalk, but denied ever indulging in harder substances. This rehab visit had nothing to do with substances but was brought on by stress from brief estrangement from her steady boyfriend.

On 20 September 2005, the Swedish fashion retailer H&M announced they were dropping Moss from the advertising campaign of their autumn clothes range designed by Moss' good friend Stella McCartney. The contract was reportedly worth £4 million a year. [1] The next day, Chanel announced that it was not renewing its contract with Moss, which was set to expire in October, although the company said that its decision had nothing to do with the drug scandal. Burberry also decided to drop Moss' campaign with them.

Furthermore, the British-based cosmetics manufacturer, Rimmel, also announced its "dissatisfaction" with the recent allegations against Moss, and that the company was "reviewing the terms of its contract" with the model. Rimmel is reportedly standing by Moss with ongoing work.

Brazilian jeweler H. Stern, declared that they "hired Moss for her beauty, not her habits", and that "her personal life does not concern us", but by September 23, 2005, H. Stern had cancelled their contract with her as well.

Moss continues during this period to appear in major ad campaigns for Dior. Moss is on the cover of the November 2005 W and also inside in multiple page "fashion shoot".

Friends and supporters of Moss have stood up to defend her, including models Naomi Campbell and Helena Christensen, French actress Catherine Deneuve, pop singer Robbie Williams, ex-beau Johnny Depp, and designer Alexander McQueen.

Moss herself has issued an apology, though is stopped short of admitting drug use. "I take full responsibility for my actions. I also accept that there are various personal issues that I need to address and have started taking the difficult, yet necessary, steps to resolve them," Moss said, "I want to apologize to all of the people I have let down because of my behavior which has reflected badly on my family, friends, co-workers, business associates and others."

Moss is scheduled to return to work in November, 2005 with a full list of bookings, after a brief visit to the Caribbean with a friend.

Notable appearance for 2006 is her starring for the new Pirelli Calendar.
