In video gaming, the Nintendo era is the era when the Nintendo Entertainment System dominated the gaming market. The Sega Master System and Atari 7800 were also part of this era. It began approximately two years after the video game crash of 1983. Censorship of video games was often used in localizing Japanese games to North America.

The Nintendo era was considered "the stone age of role-playing video games." It is the era when famous video game series like Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Double Dragon, Nekketsu Kouha: Kunio-Kun, Final Fantasy, Mega Man, and Dragon Quest were born.
