Africa
Africa is the world's 3rd largest continent. At 11,608,000 sq. miles (30,065,000 sq. km) it covers 20.3% of the total land area on earth. Africa was named for the Afridi tribe, who dwelt in Northern Africa around the area of Carthage. Another theory is that the name comes from the Greek word aphrike (without cold) or the Latin word aprica (sunny). The Romans originally used Africa to denote the northern part of the continent.
