Li Peng is currently (early 2002) chairman of the National People's Congress of China and number two in the Chinese Communist Party behind Jiang Zemin. He served as Prime Minister of China between 1987 and 1997 and is disliked by many for his role in the crackdown in response to the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989.
